INTRODUCTION TO MICROBES. WHAT IS A MICROORGANISM? A microorganism or microbe is a tiny living thing that we cannot see without the aid of a microscope.
Micro-Organisms. What is a Micro-Organism? An living organism that is too small to be seen with the naked eye. Also known as “microbes”. They are found.
 Non-living: Need a host to reproduce  Lysogenic Cycle: break out of the cell when reproduction is finished.  Lytic Cycle: Can remain dormant for long.

Three types of micro-organisms: Viruses Bacteria Fungi Microbiology Three types of micro-organisms: Viruses Bacteria Fungi

Micro biology is the study of very small living things Bacteria: Larger than viruses Do not have a nucleus Reproduce asexually

Bacteria Advantages Disadvantages Cause plants and Cause diseases   Cause plants and Cause diseases animals to decay Destroys food Helps make cheese and butter

List of diseases: Tetanus Pneumonia Gum decay Chlorea

Anti - biotics Made by bacteria to kill other harmful bacteria. Example: Penicillin

Viruses Viruses are very small. Cannot reproduce by themselves (non living) List of diseases: Measles Mumps Rabies Chicken Pox

Fungi Do not contain chlorophyll and cannot make their own food Fungi act as decomposers Examples of fungi: Yeast Mushroom

Fungi Advantages Disadvantages Can be eaten Some are poisonous Cause plants to decay Cause human diseases

Biotechnology The use of living things (enzymes, plants) to make useful products. Example of products: Food, drugs for antibiotics, brewing alcohol, hormones (insulin)
