2.5 Proving Statements about Segments CAS 2, 4, 16 2.5 Proving Statements about Segments Goal 1: Justify statements about congruent segments. Goal 2: Write reasons for steps in a proof.

Definition of Theorem A true statement that follows as a result of other true statement(s). All theorems must be proven.

Types of Proofs Two-Column Proofs Paragraph Proofs Graphic Proofs Uses two columns. First column, are numbered statements put in a logical order and on the same line in the second column are reasons for each statement. Paragraph Proofs A proof written in paragraph form. Graphic Proofs A proof using very thorough informational sketches filled with details Flow Proofs A chart-like proof. Statements and reasons are placed in a logical order on a chart.

Theorem 2.1 Properties of Segment Congruence When dealing with segments, the reflexive property, symmetric property, and transitive property are all applicable.

Ex. 1 Proof Given: X is the midpoint of MN and MX=RX. Prove: XN=RX S M
