Chapter 10.4: Changes in Government and Economics EQ: What major changes took place in England’s government during the Middle Ages?

Common Law Court decisions based on local customs/laws, known as Common Law Punishments for similar crimes were different throughout England – this was unfair to people In 1150s King Henry II began appointing royal judges in England to bring consistency to legal system – helping to ensure equal treatment

Magna Carta In 1199 King John came to power Taxed people heavily to fund wars and conquests Nobles grew tired of King John’s bad treatment, forced him to sign Magna Carta in 1215 Magna Carta guaranteed several rights for people, including the right to trial by jury

FOR YOUR INFORMATION: More About the Magna Carta Also guaranteed protection of the law Guaranteed king could not collect money from nobles without their approval Set example for later democratic developments in England, and around the world

Parliament In 1264 King Henry III removed from throne after breaking agreements with nobles King replaced with parliament Parliament – group of representatives that made government decisions Eventually a King was restored to throne, but Parliament stayed as part of government Parliament gained right to control collection of taxes in England and approve new laws, limiting power of English king
