Jamestown Settlement

Pilgrims Founded in 1620 Landed in Plymouth Colony aboard Mayflower Signed Mayflower Compact Came because they wanted to separate from Church of England. Also called Separatists

Massachusetts Bay Colony Founded by Puritans in 1630 Came because they wanted to reform the Church of England. They wanted to what they called “A City Upon a Hill.”

John Winthrop was chosen as First Governor and elected 12 times

Puritans Religious group who hoped to reform or change the Church of England The king disapproved of Puritans and their ideas. Persecuted them-canceled Puritan business charters, and had some Puritans jailed. Puritans believed that England had fallen on “evil and declining times.” They wanted to build a new society based on biblical laws and teachings.

Puritans Only male church members could vote – elected representatives to assembly called the General Court If you questioned how colony was being run, you could be banished

There were many fights against settlers:known as King Philip’s War As settlers expanded outward, relationship with American Indians worsened There were many fights against settlers:known as King Philip’s War After a year of fighting Metacom was killed. The English sold his family and 1,000 Native Americans into slavery in West Indies “I am resolved not to see the day when I have no country.”
