Massachusetts Bay Colony Founded by Puritans in 1630 Came because they wanted to reform the Church of England. They wanted to what they called “A City Upon a Hill.”
John Winthrop was chosen as First Governor and elected 12 times
Puritans Religious group who hoped to reform or change the Church of England The king disapproved of Puritans and their ideas. Persecuted them-canceled Puritan business charters, and had some Puritans jailed. Puritans believed that England had fallen on “evil and declining times.” They wanted to build a new society based on biblical laws and teachings.

Rhode Island Roger Williams
RHODE ISLAND Founded in 1636 Narragansett Indians sold land to Puritan Minister Roger Williams after he was banished from Massachusetts.
Roger Williams believed that Puritan Church had too much power, All white men had right to vote church and state should be completely separate believed in religious tolerance
Anne Hutchinson
Anne Hutchinson Puritan woman who had discussion meetings after Minister’s sermons, questioning church’s teachings She told the court that God spoke directly to her. Banished Ended up going to Rhode Island.
New Hampshire Founded in 1680 Settlers from MA spread out across New England Trading and fishing villages founded
LIFE IN N.E. COLONIES Tightly knit towns and villages dealt with local matters as community Center of village was a common, an open field where cattle graze, and a meetinghouse Town meetings were held in the meetinghouse as well as school. Settlers discussed and voted on many issues.
