Exploring the indigenization of data collection  Daniel Domaguin, LCSW Mentor: Bruce Friedman, PhD, CSWM, LCSW NSWM Annual Management Conference 6/15/2018

Project background Serving Indigenous people through non-profits funded by governmental institutions Lack of data from Indigenous sources Only Western modes of data collection seen as “legitimate” Misrepresentation of Indigenous people in mass media and society Ignorance of Indigenous histories and contemporary issues Indigenous peoples facegenocide Photo retrieved from http://s889.photobucket.com/user/sdaiyc619/library/2010%20Culture%20Camp%20Day%202/

Year 1: Initial exploration Formulation of project Collaboration with mentor to formulate research questions and connect to resources Literature review Discussions with Indigenous researchers and scholars regarding data collections issues

Year 1: Results Racial and demographic (mis)classification “Statistically insignificant” Importance of indigenizing data collection

Year 1: Group article Shared among eight NSWM Fellows Promoting indigenization of resource management Improves resource management via promoting: Transparency Accountability Representation Indigenization Ethical inclusion of “Indigenous knowledges, voices, critiques…and materials, as well as the establishment of physical and epistemic so thoroughly” that they constitute an essential element of an organization (Sasakamoose & Peete, 2015)

Year 2: Inspiration Background Mount Bidwell California Indian Day Celebration honoring Fort Bidwell Indian Boarding School Elders

Year 2: Expansion How do we ensure that Native communities both have access to data that is gathered on them, and have space to be agents in data collection, including growing more Native researchers from Native communities? Beyond literature review and discussions Key informant interviews Connections with research institutions

Year 2: Design Combined NSWM fellowship with responsibilities for The California Endowment (TCE) project “Advocating for Native Health Care Access” Worked with mentor on project, including finalization of IRB application prior to submission Performed key informant interviews from leaders at educational/research institutions centering Native voices/issues Due to late approval of IRB, number of interviews conducted were fewer than desired Utilized Google Forms to expedite process of obtaining consent

Year 2: Interview results Importance of collaborating with local tribes and Native community members Models for collaboration with Native communities Community-based participatory research (CBPR) Language centers Hosting Native community members at institutions to facilitate greater relationships Obstacles Lack of outreach to local communities One (or few) people at the institution engaging with communities Historical knowledge “The university itself”
