Southern fears of modernisation It is hard to separate this out from economic difference and legacy of the past, but essentially: The South are economically backward by choice.   They fear that modernisation will destroy there way of life including slavery (mechanisation could remove need for slaves) They also fear urbanisation followed by mixing of the races.
