1996/ Kabul, Afghanistan When the Taliban seized control of Afghanistan in 1996, they imposed rules on what could or could not be displayed in art. Depicting animals or humans in paints or sculpture was strictly forbidden. Methodically the Taliban began destroying artwork they found offensive. Fearing that much of Afghanistan’s culture would be lost forever, Muhammad Yousef Asefi, a physician and artist, came up with a dangerous plan to save over one hundred oil paintings for future generations. At the risk of being jailed or executed, he secretly began dabbing watercolor over the living creatures shown in the paintings, disguising the forbidden objects and replacing them with acceptable ones. In 2001, when the Taliban government was finally pushed from power, Muhammad reversed the process. Using a wet sponge, he removed the watercolor, restoring the doctored paintings to their bright and vibrant original condition. One man who dared to defy the Taliban saved centuries of art for the future generations of Afghanistan to enjoy.
