The Background CHARACTERS SETTING PLOT Peter (What was his dad like?) The Jewish believers abroad SETTING Turkey (readers) Written “in Babylon” (5:13)  Egyptian Babylon (a military post), Babylon (Iraq), Jerusalem or Rome. THE SETTING

Papyrus Bodmer VIII (Vatican Library) fine della Prima lettera di Pietro e inizio della Seconda lettera di Pietro Papyrus Bodmer VIII (Vatican Library) A leaf containing the Epistles of Peter on Papyrus 72 (3rd/4th century)

I Peter 1: 13-25 13 Therefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and rest your hope fully upon the grace that is to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; 14 as obedient children, not conforming yourselves to the former lusts, as in your ignorance; 15 but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, 16 because it is written, “Be holy, for I am holy.”

I Peter 1: 13-25 17 And if you call on the Father, who without partiality judges according to each one’s work, conduct yourselves throughout the time of your stay here in fear; 18 knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot. 20 He indeed was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you 21 who through Him believe in God, who raised Him from the dead and gave Him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.

I Peter 1: 13-25 22 Since you have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit in sincere love of the brethren, love one another fervently with a pure heart, 23 having been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of God which lives and abides forever,

I Peter 1: 13-25 24 because “All flesh is as grass, And all the glory of man as the flower of the grass. The grass withers, and its flower falls away, 25 But the word of the LORD endures forever.” Now this is the word which by the gospel was preached to you. (2:1 Therefore, … 2 as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby)

How should we live before the Father? In fear In love In the Word

How should we live before the Father? V13 Therefore… (because we’ve received Christ as foretold in the Word) gird up the loins of your mind, (mentally prepare for action) be sober, (serious, focused, sober) rest your hope fully upon the grace …; (trust) 14 as obedient children, (not like before); 15 be holy in all your conduct

How should we live before the Father? And if you call on the Father, ... conduct yourselves throughout the time of your stay here in fear;  (…redeemed …from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers, … with the precious blood of Christ,) Scary! Who lives up to this? God expects change!

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom Hebrews 12 “My son, do not despise the chastening of the LORD, Nor be discouraged when you are rebuked by Him; 6 For whom the LORD loves He chastens, And scourges every son whom He receives.” 7 If you endure chastening, God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom a father does not chasten? …9 ...we have had human fathers who corrected us, and we paid them respect. Shall we not much more readily be in subjection to the Father of spirits and live? 10 For they indeed for a few days chastened us as seemed best to them, but He for our profit, that we may be partakers of His holiness. 11 Now no chastening seems to be joyful for the present, but painful; nevertheless, afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it. Our father corrects us so that we become wise partakers of his holiness. – like him

How should we live before the Father? In fear (I Peter 1:12-21) Although Fear is true, what might Peter remember about his walk with God (in Jesus)?

How should we live before the Father? 22 Since you have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit in sincere love of the brethren, love one another fervently with a pure heart, 23 having been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of God which lives and abides forever, (2:1 Therefore, … 2 as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby)
