CERVICAL CANCER 14TH commonest cancer – falling year on year Most cases develop in women aged between 25 and 45. Some cases develop in older and younger women. It is rare in women aged under 25 years.
CERVICAL CANCER This is because cervical cancer can be prevented by regular cervical screening tests. In less developed parts of the world, cervical cancer is the second or third most common type of cancer in women.
CERVICAL CANCER -Symptoms? Bleeding between normal periods (intermenstrual bleeding). Bleeding after having sex (postcoital bleeding).
CERVICAL CANCER -Symptoms? Any vaginal bleeding in women past the menopause. A vaginal discharge that smells unpleasant. Discomfort or pain during sex
CERVICAL CANCER HPV and cervical cancer Two types, HPV 16 and 18, are involved in the development of most cases of cervical cancer (70%). (Note: some other strains of HPV cause common warts and verrucas. These strains of HPV are not associated with cervical cancer.)
CERVICAL CANCER HPV and cervical cancer The HPV vaccine has been introduced for girls from the age of 12 years in the UK. It is very effective at stopping cancer of the cervix from developing – 70% reduction
CERVICAL CANCER HPV and cervical cancer However, even if you have had the HPV vaccine, you must attend for cervical screening. This is because the vaccine does not guarantee complete protection against cervical cancer.
