Vision We seek to create a world in which all students in our country can make use of pathways that weave together geoscience learning with opportunities to use that knowledge to serve their local community.

Vision We seek to create a world in which all students in our country can make use of pathways that weave together geoscience learning with opportunities to use that knowledge to serve their local community. Individually these pathways strengthen and diversify the geoscience workforce and the geoscientific capacity of the communities.

Individually these pathways strengthen and diversify the geoscience workforce and the geoscientific capacity of the communities. Collectively, the participants create a force for global sustainability and resilience.

Growing Geoscience Capacity to Address Local Issues Learn geoscience in the context of compelling local issues Use geoscience to address local challenges Explore geoscience career pathways At multiple levels in the path from middle school to the workforce Relevance and empowerment through immediate use Focus of our research effort

EarthConnections Alliance

What is a Program Partner? An organization or program that has resources, assets, or knowledge & expertise that will help Regional Alliances engage with their communities and implement and strengthen their pathways Regional Alliances identify needs (Program Partners) in their project plans with the help of the Consulting Corps Program Partners are funded through proposal submitted by Regional Alliance Program Partners are an integral part of the CoP

EarthConnections Pathways: 1) Are embedded in the local community 2) Use geoscience to address a local need or problem 3) Connect learning opportunities at multiple educational levels and into the geoscience workforce 4) Couple opportunities for classroom learning with opportunities to use knowledge in community service at each level 5) Use mentoring and signposting to support students in recognizing and navigating the pathway.

Leveraging Existing Academic Relationships and Programs Local Issue: Earthquake readiness Community partners: High Schools Colleges and Universities Professional Groups Activities: Planning Meetings Field trip for geology clubs Teaching practices workshop Leveraging existing academic relationships and programs

Regional Alliance Priorities for Implementation Funds Build lasting local capacity (e.g. through professional development for those engaged in pathway implementation) Support adaptation or implementation of tested materials and models including those developed by the program partners or by other regional alliances. Are part of a plan leading to long term sustainability of the regional alliance and pathway (e.g. transitional funding for teacher participation to enable development of long term local funding) Test missing pieces that will link together existing pathway elements Majority of funds will be used to build capacity through work with program partners

Program Partners Commit To: Shared vision of using regional alliances to create EarthConnections pathways Nominating members to the Consulting Corps (optional) Sharing expertise and resources in ways that benefit Regional Alliance pathway implementation Participating fully in the EC Community of Practice Being a good EC citizen: communicating, responding, sharing and attribution, inclusive manners, representing the collective work to others

Community of Practice Brings together program partners, regional alliances and other expertise Strengthens ability to create successful pathways embedded in community Includes alliance participants Virtual and in-person programming

Consulting Corps Agrees to help establish regional alliances and support them in pathway development: participate in training that prepares them to support Aliance formation including community engagement, Pathway planning, and Engagement with program partners; work with ~ 3 regional alliances through a series of virtual and face to face meetings for 2-3 years 3 year commitment; $10k/yr
