Introduction to electronic books searching in ergonomics These slides take you through some of the basic ways of searching the Librarys electronic book resources for ergonomics.

Electronic Books E-books have exactly the same content as print books The whole book can be read online, or you can jump to specific chapters and sections in chapters. You can search through the books for certain keywords, and print out or save pages within copyright (usually about 10%). We have a growing number of e-books but please be aware that not all books we would like are available for us to buy. You may be able to buy an E-book yourself which we cannot.

e-readers and software You will need Internet access with Adobe Reader (with Digital Editions downloadable from Currently, it is not possible to download library e- books to dedicated e-book readers, such as a Kindle or Sony Reader. Tablets, such as the Apple iPad, will work with e-books as long as Adobe Acrobat Reader PDFs can be displayed.

Electronic book suppliers We buy e-books from a number of suppliers & then access the books through their web sites. Publishers do not make all their books available for libraries to buy. The main e-book suppliers we use are: Dawsonera EBL MyiLibrary & also netLibrary (now EBSCO) and Taylor & Francis

To see a list of relevant e-books for your course select Subject Resources.

Select the Electronic Books link on the Subject Resources page for Ergonomics

This is a basic title listing which links to the library Catalogue. Click the title link.

You are taken to the library catalogue entry for the book. Select the e-book supplier link (e.g EBL, Dawsonera, MyiLibrary)

The most straightforward way to see the contents is to Read Online. For some e-book suoppliers you can download the book, but note that you are downloading for a limited time only (e.g. 24 hours) and not permanently.

Select a chapter & then you can move from page to page. Or you can search the book.

Move back and forwards from page to page with the >> & << icons. You can print or save pages within the copyright Regulations (about 10%). With EBL you may be prompted to take out a loan of the book. This is like borrowing a book for a set period, not a financial loan.

Using dawsonera you need to click on the Athens Login link.

Again you can read online or download for a limited period. Again read online is more straightforward.

And again you can select a chapter, move from page to page or search the book, copy and print pages within copyright.

Click here to copy or print pages within Copyright legislation. You wont be able to do more than a set limit

You can also look for e-books using the library catalogue & limit your search to e-books.

Select the Catalogue link from the library web page.

You can type in an author & title word. This will look for all books we have, print and electronic. This example looks for the book by D Meister Human factors in systems design.

An e-book will be identified by eBook or electronic resource. Then click on the title link. When you search the catalogue, you will find both print & e-books & will often see a list of books after a search. You can refine a search to just e-books by clicking on eBooks under Format..

Now click on the e-book supplier link e.g. dawsonera. EBL as before

Using dawsonera you need to click on the Athens Login link.

You can select More search options to start with to limit the search to e-books in the first place.

Type in your search details & select eBooks from the Collection drop-down menu
