The elements

LEARNING GOALS We are learning to identify and classify elements on the periodic table. We are learning to identify elements by their names or symbols.

Elements and their symbols 90 naturally occur on earth 25 new ones made by chemists divided into metals, non-metals and metalloids based on properties

metals majority of elements most are shiny and silver or grey in colour excellent conductors of electricity and heat malleable and ductile Ag, Na, Pd, Hg

Non-metals only 17 elements grouped together mainly because don’t resemble metals. 11 of the non-metals are gases at room temperature 5 are solids 1, bromine, is a red-brown liquid

metalloids metallic and non-metallic properties. don’t conduct electricity very well – semiconductors. easier to control the flow of electricity through semiconductors electronic devices Silicon most common

Element symbols consists of one or two letters. first letter is always capitalized. if there is a second letter, it is not capitalized. Co vs CO

LEARNING GOALS We are learning to identify and classify elements on the periodic table. We are learning to identify elements by their names or symbols.
