Section 2: Feudalism and the Manor Economy The Rise Of Europe Section 2: Feudalism and the Manor Economy Witness History Audio: Being Knighted on the Battlefield Feudalism Develops In response to waves of invasions, a new political structure called feudalism emerged in Europe in the Middle Ages. Feudalism was based on the exchange of land for loyalty, as a vassal served a lord in battle in return for a fief and its peasants. Listen to the Witness History audio. Then read aloud the main idea for each subheading in this section and show the related visuals. After listening to the Witness History audio, ask, “Why do you think a squire might be knighted on the battlefield rather than in the usual formal ceremony?” (Others may have been killed or wounded in the battle; it may be a reward for bravery.) When showing Color Transparency 41, ask students to describe the knight’s armor and weaponry and then compare them to the armor shown in the chapter opener. Ask students to speculate what this armor suggests about knights and medieval society. Note Taking Transparency 76 Witness History Video: The Rise of Feudalism 1 of 7

Peasants farmed the lord’s lands, repaired his property, and paid him fees. They also farmed several acres for themselves. Listen to the Witness History audio.
