Bacteria: Beneficial, Infectious, and Antibiotics By: Chloe Keefe, Carly Driscoll, Georgia Michener, and Savannah Glassey

Overview Bacteria Disinfectants and Antibiotics Penicillin and Tetracycline Amoxicillin and Macrolide

How is bacteria beneficial?  Probiotics-live bacteria that lives in guts  Cleans up oil spills Makes drugs   Fermented Food-prevent foods from spoiling  Decomposer's- breaks down materials  CK

How is bacteria harmful? Causes food to rot Pathogen- virus or microorganism that can cause disease E. coli- causes intestinal infection (contaminated food or water)  Lyme disease, food poisoning, and pneumonia  Harmful bacteria can be fatal  CK

How disease spreads Insects Through air (coughing) Fluid transfer (urine or saliva) Indirectly from an infected person to the environment (door handles, bench tops or desks)  Contaminated water or food  CK

Prevent disease from spreading Wash your hands often Get vaccinated Cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze Throw away used tissues Do not share food or drinks CK

Antibiotics Used in biotic environments Destroys bacteria or inhibits its growth  Interferes with the bacteria's cell wall Microorganisms can grow resistant  CD

What do antibiotics treat? Bacterial infections Prescribed for serious infections Not effective against viruses Pneumonia, strep throat, UTIs CD

Disinfectants Applied to abiotic surfaces Kills or inhibits microorganisms Disrupt the microbe's cellular makeup Air disinfectants, aldehydes,  alcohols CD

Antibiotics vs. Disinfectants Can only kill germs on abiotic surfaces  Counters, toilets, etc. Used in biotic environments Fight against germs inside the body CD

Penicillin Antibiotic Treats bacterial infections  Strep throat, scarlet fever, meningitis  Ear, skin, and throat infections GM

Penicillin Nausea, vomiting, and stomach pains Side effects of penicillin  Nausea, vomiting, and stomach pains  Headaches, swollen tongue or white patches in mouth Symptoms of pneumonia Sharp pain in chest  Fever, chills, dehydration, fatigue Wheezing, shortness of breath, coughing, etc. GM

Tetracycline Antibiotic Bacterial infections Skin, intestines, respiratory tract, urinary tract   Treats severe acne/sexually transmitted diseases GM

Tetracycline Side effects Mild nausea, vomiting, or upset stomach  Sores, swollen tongue,  trouble swallowing  LYME DISEASE symptoms Stiffness, swelling, and pain in joints and muscles  Fatigue and fevers Rashes and headaches GM

Amoxicillin Treatment Antibiotic only treats bacterial infections not viruses Ear, Skin, Throat, Bladder infections    SG

Symptoms/Side Effects Bronchitis:  Cough-chronic, dry, or contain phlegm  Fatigue body  Headaches, tight chest, sore throat, shortness of breath Amoxicillin Side Effects: Nausea, stomach pain Headache or dizziness SG

Macrolide Treatment Antibiotic only treats bacterial infections not viruses Treats the respiratory tract, sexually transmitted diseases, sinus, chest, skin, and stomach infections SG

Symptoms/Side Effects Azithromycin; Sinus Infection Pain in sinuses, face, back of ears Nasal congestion  Tenderness and swelling in the face  Macrolide Side Effects: Nausea or vomiting Ringing in ears SG

C What is a pathogen? A- Virus that always results in death B-Cleanses the body of harmful bacteria  C- Microorganism or virus that can cause disease D- The path the virus takes in your body C CK

Which of the following is not a way to prevent diseases from spreading? A- Washing your hands B- Sharing food and drinks C- Getting vaccinated D- Covering when sneezing or coughing B CK

Which of these can antibiotics treat? A- The flu B- Strep throat C- Mono D- The common cold B CD

What are disinfectants applied to? A- Cuts and wounds B- They are taken orally C- Biotic surfaces D- Abiotic surfaces D CD

What type of infections does Penicillin treat? A) Viral Infections B) Respiratory Infections C) Ear, nose and throat Infections D) Urinary Infections C GM

Which of the following are not side effects of Tetracycline? A) Dizziness B) Nausea C) Sores in mouth D) Vomiting A GM

Which of the following is a side effect of Amoxicillin? A. Swelling B. Ringing in ears C. Nausea D. Congestion C SG

Which of the following does Macrolide not treat? A. Stomach infections B. Chest infections C. Sinus infections D. Bladder infections D SG
