Diversity of Life Test 2015 Study Guide Answers

Section 1: Ribbon of Life Atoms Molecules Organelles Cells Tissues Organs Systems Complex Multicellular Organism

Short Answer Eukaryotic cells have a nucleus and prokaryotic cells don’t. Life begins at the stage of the cell because that is the first stage that can do all the characteristics of life. The two stages are atoms and molecules. The three stages are tissues, organs and systems.

Ribbon of Life Definitions Atoms Definition- the smallest units of an element Molecules Definition- combinations of atoms bonded together Organelles Definition- the complex structures inside cells Cells Definition- the fundamental units of life

Tissues Definition- lots of cells of the same kind working together Organs Definition- two or more tissues working together Systems Definition- organs and tissues working together Complex Multicellular Organism- Definition- plants and animals

Ribbon of Life Extra Information Atoms- Extra Information- They are the fundamental material things are made of They have protons, neutrons, and electrons Molecules- Example: two hydrogen atoms bond with an oxygen atom and form a molecule of water (H2O) Organelles- Different organelles perform different jobs.

Cells- Extra Information- Two kinds of cells: Prokaryotic-bacteria and Eukaryotic- animal, plant, protist, fungus Eukaryotic cells have a nucleus, prokaryotic don’t. Tissues- Extra Information- Only in multicellular organisms (plant and animal). Not in bacteria, protists, or single-celled fungi.

Organs- Extra Information- Animals have many organs Organs- Extra Information- Animals have many organs. Examples in humans- lungs, liver, kidney, heart. Plants have 3 organs- roots, stems, and leaves Systems- Extra Information- Examples in humans- circulatory, respiratory, nervous, and digestive systems Example in plants- vascular system CMO- Extra Information- Plants and animals are highly organized, complex, free living life forms. They are organisms made of up to millions of cells organized into many kinds of tissues, organs, and systems.
