Turning Negatives into Positives Southeastern Technical College

Turning Negatives into Positives What is a negative- characterized by the absence of distinguishing or marked qualities or features; lacking positive attributes. What is a positive- confident in opinion or assertion; fully assured.

Going day-to-day with negative thoughts constantly can weigh a person down both physically and mentally. It is important to shift these negative thoughts into positive ones before it can ruin your day and take a toll on your personal life. Many people do not think to push the thoughts away from our thinking pattern, but we can actually control what thoughts we decide to let affect us.

Workwise Book Choosing a job ( Blue Book) Pages 13-19 “Maintaining your positive attitude tackles work, especially when you face setbacks”. However you can turn negative experiences into positives actions that will help you succeed.”(Pg. 13). Setbacks- Problems that make your progress more difficult. (Negatives)

Workwise Book ( Blue Book Pg. 14) Exercise: Learning from Mistakes: Imagine your rushing to work and your running late and you look at your calendar when you get to your office and realize that you have an meeting at an off campus site location that’s 25 minutes away and you wont be able to get there on time. 5 minutes to do an activity.

Push Negative thoughts out One tactic that successful positive people have is to ignore and reject negative thoughts that enter the mind. It takes about 30 seconds of dwelling on a thought for it to enter our deeper consciousness. You can train your brain to reject these thoughts, stopping them before they can take hold. Release those thoughts from your mind and do not allow them back in. This is something that can be practiced and improved on over time. Some people find that meditation practices can improve the control you have over your thoughts by sharpening the mind.

5 Steps for Transforming Negative Thoughts into Positive Beliefs Stay away from “all-or-nothing” thinking.(When we slip into “all-or-nothing” thinking we see our circumstances as either black or white with not much in between.) Would you rather be right or happy?(I can be very stubborn. At times my stubbornness has cost me. It has caused me to miss the opportunity to accept an apology or consider a different point-of-view.) Change your mental filter.(Left unattended, chronic negative thinking can begin to shape the way we see the world.) Try not to take everything personally.(It may be hard to hear, but not everything is about you and not everything is about me, either. Fear, paranoia and perhaps a measure of insecurity can lead us to believe the way other people react, or the things they say, are directed to us.) Celebrate.(Celebrate the good things when they happen. Don’t simply dismiss them or minimize them.)
