Types of Data

Data Sets

Definitions Qualitative Variables = Classify individuals into categories Quantitative Variables = Tell how much or how many of something there is

1. Classify the variable as qualitative or quantitative Hair color

2. Classify the variable as qualitative or quantitative Number of pets

3. Classify the variable as qualitative or quantitative Social Security Number

4. Classify the variable as qualitative or quantitative Assessed value of a car

Definitions Ordinal Variables = Qualitative variables whose categories have a natural ordering Nominal Variables = Qualitative variables whose categories have no natural ordering

Definitions Discrete Variables = Quantitative variables whose possible values can be listed. The list may be infinite. “No Decimals” Continuous Variables = Quantitative variables that can take on any value in some interval. The possible values of a continuous variable are not restricted to any list. “Can Have Decimals”

Amt of oil in a car at any given time 5. Determine whether the quantitative variables is discrete or continuous Amt of oil in a car at any given time

Number of deer in a forest 6. Determine whether the quantitative variables is discrete or continuous Number of deer in a forest

7. Determine whether the quantitative variables is discrete or continuous Age of a Student

Temperature of the water in a swimming pool 8. Determine whether the quantitative variables is discrete or continuous Temperature of the water in a swimming pool
