Everyone in this class is an “A” student until you prove yourself otherwise.
Why do you need to take this course?
Why do you need to take this course? A company must produce products in an optimal way to compete in today’s global marketplace.
Why do you need to take this course? A knowledge of the basic manufacturing processes is essential for a successful engineer in today’s global marketplace.
What do engineers do? Research Design Products Manufacture Products Manage Departments and Companies
Course Objectives Students should understand of the principles of the major manufacturing processes Students should be able to recognize the standard processes used to produce products Students should be able to select the optimal process to produce a product
What is a manufacturing process? Manufacturing processes alter a material’s properties in a controlled manner to produce components of products.
Types of Processes Material removal 2. Deform or shape material through heat or pressure 3. Join two or more materials
Remove Material Sawing Drilling Milling Turning (Lathe) Abrasive finishing
Deform/Shape Material Casting Rolling/Forging Extrusion/Drawing Sheet metal forming Powder metal processes
Join Two or More Materials Welding Brazing Soldering Adhesive bonding Fastening
Math/Manufacturing In calculus there is usually only one correct answer to a problem. In manufacturing there are usually many ways to make a part, some ways are better than others
Manufacturing Factors that must be considered. Cost Quality Safety In manufacturing there are usually many ways to make a part, some ways are better than others. Factors that must be considered. Cost Quality Safety Equipment available Quantity
Manufacturing A company must produce products in an optimal way to compete in today’s global marketplace. On all tests and quiz questions you are expected to give an optimal answer to a question, not just an answer that will work.
Example How can you sharpen a wooden pencil?
Example How can you sharpen a wooden pencil? Knife or other sharp object Sand or abrasion Toy pencil sharpener Hand pencil sharpener Electric pencil sharpener Automated pencil sharpener
Example Situation How can you sharpen a wooden pencil? You are taking a timed test You are in your dorm room You are designing a department office You have 500,000 pencils that are to be packaged with a crossword puzzle
Syllabus
Grading Policy Make-up work will be allowed only when arrangements are made prior to absence. No two homeworks should be identical* *Identical homework – one will be graded and points will be divided by the number of students involved
Manufacturing Processes Laboratory Experience
Manufacturing Processes Laboratory Experience Provide students with hands on experience in a manufacturing laboratory Students should have the ability to operate a drill press, mill, saw, and lathe
Manufacturing Processes Laboratory Experience C - Clamp
Manufacturing Lab 9 people have been assigned to each lab Equipment used: Saw Mill Drill Lathe Hand Tools You are expected to attend the lab in which you are enrolled You will be permitted to attend another lab only at the request of another faculty member or coop staff
Lab Rules 1. Safety Glasses MUST be worn at all times 2. Good shoes with leather soles - no sandals 3. Do not wear loose fitting clothes in the lab 4. No horseplay 5. Professional conduct including language 6. Report any unsafe conditions to your TA 7. Do not approach someone who is working on a machine from his or her blind side 8. Identify dangers associated with a machine before you run it. 9. If you break something report it to the TA immediately 10. Clean up before you leave. 11. You will be issued material for one project. If you make a mistake on a part you can get additional material and machine another part after you have completed all other components of the project 12. Have a great experience
