Intro slide - not too much to say Things that we need to cover in this presentation: - documentation and images of the transportation technology investigation (sketches, initial ideas) - motivation (and/or need) for our design (why should they care about the shoe?) - demo (setup before hand) - video in situ (If the video fits the flow of showing it first I would say that we should do that. Assuming the video/demo takes 3-3.5 mins - the rest of this has to be covered in 3.5-4 mins. 1.25 mins each – I’d say 3 slides each max – not including the intro slide / team slide

TEAM Holy shit, Max is stupid. Look at him. What an idiot! ANDREW CORNELIS MAX RUTMAN OREN BERKOWITZ CLARE LIN ZOE BEBA Holy shit, Max is stupid. Look at him. What an idiot! Backgrounds? Majors? Spirit animal? Shit, I dunno.

Versatility Path Tracing in our brainstorming process we talked about virtual space and how we might be able to interact and move through it we talked about leaving virtual trails for other people to follow your virtual path we talked about picking up signals to create a virtual landscape as far as the type of transportation to use we decided to use shoes. footwear is the most versatile type of human powered transportation. it is the most used also. we talked about shoes that were aesthetically very identifiable or ones that were simple and did not stand out too much. Background of investigation what else did we consider? Water, snow, scooter, trail Leaving a trail lead to the idea of a virtual trail The most versatile type of human powered transportation is footwear . it comes in all sorts or shapes and size (Shoes, boots, sandals, cleats, Without a doubt the most used type of human powered transportation However, most of the time it is the least noticeable type of transportation and least noticeable garment. We began our investigation of footwear by considering all of the different types of footwear available.

TRANSIT THROUGH DIFFERENT TYPES OF SPACE VIRTUAL PHYSICAL Dunne (from the readings) believed that increased awareness of Hertzian space will assist our design practice. Most design deals with the physical. In this project we wanted to connect the two. Our main modes of physical transportation and the devices that we transport around (we are highlighting the invisible connection that they share)

HERTZIAN SPACE: “an ‘electro-climate,’ inhabited by humans and electronic machines, as the interface between electromagnetic waves and human experiences.” Most space we inhabit is bound by physical barriers. It is appropriate to call Hertzian Space a climate because climate is not bound by anything. it is more about proximity and range. Why did we choose to work with Hertzian space ? - Electronic devices each person owns always exponentially increasing. - Ask who has a laptop with them/phone/arduino/point out the electrical devices in the lab - interactivity is good! - Give an idea of all the crossing invisible fields. - Every device from iPhone to TV to light gives off an electromagnetic field that extends infinitely into space - Human eye only sees so much. Imagine how our perspective would change if we could view this “climate” - Would block everything!

things we thought about in the initial brainstorm of ideas

VISUALIZING HERTZIAN SPACE Our actions made visible and identities made visible What kind of relationship does each of us have with the devices we use? What relationship does each device have with every other device. Is my phone to your phone different from my phone to your computer?

Today, these invisible, yet binding relationships control many aspects of our lives. Most of what goes on between individuals and their device is private However, much of this private interaction takes place in a public place. Our experiment investigated what happened when we took Hertzian space and melded public and private into one

By virtually scanning devices via Bluetooth you are accessing data that you would otherwise not have access to. Most times this data is ignored when someone searches for a specific device or network. The Hertzian shoe reverses this idea.

We take the public info – that most people consider “private” and put it on display. Sometimes, people don’t realize how much info they actually leave out in Hertzian Space.

Pictured: Adidas "Social Media Shoe" by Nash Money Credits: Pocket-Lint Room for future improvement: Streamline & upgrade design: incorporate all elements within shoe proper add sounds and lights to better capture attention of passerbys More features to explore: what else can we identify and expose in the virtual world? Some possibilities: wi-fi browsing history GPS Practical applications: what can we do with such interaction? Some ideas: bring strangers together check-in to locations various games (e.g. try to find or avoid someone) The possibilities are endless! :)
