Cancer & The Sun According to the Canadian Cancer Society, skin cancer is the most commonly diagnosed type of cancer in Canada. One of the causes of skin cancer is excessive exposure to the ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the SUN. You can reduce your risk by blocking the radiation either physically or chemically. Physical barriers such as long sleeves, a hat, and zinc oxide sunblock, prevent UV radiation from getting to your skin.

Cancer & The Sun A chemical sunscreen absorbs part of the UV radiation so that it is less damaging. How long does it take for your unprotected skin to begin to burn (experience cellular damage)? The SPF factor extends this time NOTE: Cancer causing UV rays are also produced by tanning beds!

Overall Expectations In this unit, you will Analyse some current technology or substances that have an impact on human tissues organs, or systems, and evaluate their effects on human health Investigate cell division, cell specialization, and the organization of systems in animals, including humans, using various laboratory techniques. Demonstrate an understanding of the hierarchy of cells, tissues, organs, and systems in animals, including humans.

BIG IDEAS All animals are made of specialized cells, tissues, and organs that are organized into organ systems Although technology and chemicals can be used to improve human health, they can also constitute a health hazard.

Getting Started: Useful Concepts & Skills CONCEPTS REVIEW: A membrane sac is filled with maple syrup. It is then placed in a beaker of water as shown. NOTE: an artificial membrane only allows water to pass through

Getting Started: Useful Concepts & Skills CONCEPTS REVIEW: Will the size of the membrane sac increase or decrease? Explain why. Will the water change colour? Explain Will the syrup change colour? Explain

Getting Started: Useful Concepts & Skills CONCEPTS REVIEW: Look at the labeled illustration of a light microscope. Can you identify the different types of the microscope? Stage Eyepiece Objective lenses Fine-adjustment knob Coarse-adjustment knob

Getting Started: Useful Concepts & Skills SKILLS REVIEW: Consider the light microscope again. Describe the proper way to transport or carry a microscope. Which objective lens should you use to start viewing a slide on a microscope? Which objective lens should be in position over the stage when putting away a microscope?

Getting Started: Useful Concepts & Skills 1. What are wet mount and dry mount slides? When a specimen is prepared with or without the aid of a liquid. What is staining? Colour liquids are added to the slide to allow for visibility to cells and cell parts. We use different stains for different types of cells or depending on the structure of interest. 3. What is a scientific Drawing? A drawing of the specimen using a set of specific criteria
