The Rest Of The Standards By: Rochelle Okoro Key: Words in Red: Summarized form Words in White: Original Form

Standard: 1.A.1: a-f a.) According to Darwin’s theory of natural selection, competition for limited resources results in differential survival. Individuals with more favorable phenotypes are more likely to survive and produce more offspring, thus passing traits to subsequent generations According to Darwin’s theory, Organisms with better traits are more likely to live longer and reproduce How well a species can reproduce in an environment is measure buy the passing of genes to the next generation b) Evolutionary fitness is measure by reproductive success c) Genetic variation and mutation play roles in natural selection. a diverse gene pool is important for the survival of a species in a changing environment In an changing environment, it is best to have a gene pool that is diversified. It helps with natural selection.

Standard: 1.A.1: a-f (Contineud) d) Environments can be more or less stable or fluctuating, and this affects evolutionary rate and direction; different genetic variations can be selected in each generation. How stable an environment is can affect the way it evolves. e) An adaption is a genetic variation that is favored by selection and is manifested as a trait that provides an advantage to an organism in a particular environment A change or the process of change by which an organism or species becomes better suited to its environment. f) In addition to natural selection, chance and random events can influence the evolutionary process, especially for small populations Random events can affect small populations

1.A.2: b b) Phenotypic variations are not directed by the environment but occur through random changes in the DNA and through new gene combinations. Phenotypic variations occur through random changes

1.A.3: a, b Genetic drift is variation in the relative frequency of different genotypes in a small population a) Genetic drift is a nonselective process occurring in small populations b) Reduction of genetic variation within a given population can increase the difference between populations of the same species As reduction of genetic variation decreases, difference of populations of the same species increses.

1.C.1: a a) Speciation rates can vary, especially when adaptive radiation occurs when new habitats become available. Speciation varies when adaptive radiation occurs

4.C.2: b The way an organism adapts to an enviornment can reflect in its genome. For example, darker fur in cooler regions of the body in certain mammal species. b) An organism’s adaption to the local environment reflects a flexible response of its genome.
