Poetry: The World in Images What is an Image? An image is a single word or phrase that appeals to one of our senses: Imagine the scenes that the following lines of poetry create. How do the images make you feel?

“The House on the Hill” by Edwin Arlington Robinson Through broken walls and gray The winds blow bleak and shrill; They are all gone away

“The Black Cottage” by Robert Frost “There are bees in this wall.” He struck the clapboards, 125 Fierce heads looked out; small bodies pivoted. We rose to go. Sunset blazed on the windows. What images project the feeling of life in the lines above. In the picture?

“Lost” by Carl Sandburg Desolate and lone All night long on the lake Where fog trails and mist creeps, The whistle of a boat Calls and cries unendingly, Like some lost child In tears and trouble Hunting the harbor's breast And the harbor's eyes.

“Daily” by Naomi Shihab Nye Read “Daily” page 495. Then annotate the poem for the following: Annotate the text above to identify the following: What images are repeated in the text? What other repetition do you notice? What is the purpose of this repetition? What is the feeling created by this list of images? What two metaphors are in the last two lines of the poem? What might the metaphors mean?
