USD ELEC 301 Dr. S. M. Lord HO7 Part 2 Dr. Susan Lord B.S. Electrical Engineering (EE) & Materials Science, Cornell University M.S. and Ph.D. EE, Stanford University Assistant Professor of EE, Bucknell University Professor & Chair of EE now Ge, University of San Diego Research in Engineering Education Fellow, IEEE and ASEE Fall 2005

Engineering Schools without PhD Bucknell USD Harvey-Mudd Rose-Hulman Cal Poly West Point, Naval Academy, Air Force Academy Rowan San Jose State and CSU system And many more…

Strengths & Challenges Great opportunity for impact Teaching is valued Small classes Expectation to be “intellectually active” (maybe not $) Difficult transition from R1 PhD program Reputation Resources for research No Grad students to help Likely to be only one in your research area Need to develop collaborations! Heavy teaching load (3 courses per semester)

Applying for a job at a School without a PhD program Don’t say “I just want to teach not do any research” Do spend comparable effort on teaching and research statements For research statement, consider what is realistic without PhD students and could involve undergraduate students

Teaching Statement Be honest and thoughtful. Don’t copy from internet or someone else. Highlight your goals and beliefs as well as experiences with teaching as a TA, grader etc. Identify a few required courses that you would like to teach e.g. circuits, electronics, controls… Describe an elective that you would like to develop based on your research area

Diversity Statement Some schools ask for a diversity statement or demonstration of your experience with and commitment to diversity and inclusion. Highlight your experiences mentoring students particularly those from underrepresented groups. Include your own relevant experiences. EE lags behind most other engineering fields in representation of women and Black, Latino, and Native American students and faculty. We need you!!

Do your homework Not all schools are Research 1 “R1” with Masters and PhD programs Carefully review job ad Spend time on university & department’s websites, look at mission Value “academic excellence” “I am academically excellent” Does school have a special focus? Hispanic Serving (HIS), Historically Black (HBCU) Religious Affiliation, Military

Preparing Questions For phone/skype interview, prepare at least 2 questions. More for on-campus interview. Some good topics include Mentoring programs for new faculty Teaching load per semester, typical class size Importance of seeking external funding and what sources have been successful (NSF, companies etc.) Start up packages Could I speak with a faculty member who is _______? Start up packages: $, equipment, summer salary, student support for research or grading Spend some time on the website!

On Campus Interview Long day talking to many people Presentation on your research “job talk” Make purpose of your work clear to nonexperts (undergraduate students) Might also be asked to do a “teaching demo” or “simulated class” Ask for a specific topic if not given one Include some learning objectives Consider including active learning if comfortable Maybe ask for a section of a textbook

Maybe not.. At school with teaching focus, don’t ask about buying out of teaching as first question. If you are asked about items that are illegal (plans to have children, marital status etc.), consider deflecting e.g. “I’m not comfortable discussing personal issues during this interview. I am interested in learning more about _______ in this department.”

Valuable Advice Good luck! slord@sandiego.edu Words of wisdom Before you leave your current institution, meet with faculty who teach courses you might teach. Ask for whatever they will share Words of wisdom Syllabi, homework assignments, lecture notes, exams Good luck! slord@sandiego.edu Picture or logo for Valerie Dr. Valerie Taylor, Texas A&M Argonne National Labs
