Bible Authority – Bible Origins Some questions: What is the Bible? Where did the Bible come from? How did we get the Bible? Was and is the Bible accurately translated? Which translation is best? Isn’t King James the only “real” Bible? 3

Bible Authority – Bible Origins The Bible come from God! It is His word His communication to man Written by man, inspired by God 2 Timothy 3:16,17 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works (KJV) 4

Bible Authority – Bible Origins Written by man, inspired by God 2 Peter 1:20-21 Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost. (KJV) Written for man, defined by God Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. (KJV) 5

Language and words change Understanding of ancient languages improves Different purposes KJV – to clarify differences for Protestants from earlier translations NLT – easy to read modern version AMP – add meaning to key words NIV – modern translation to satisfy many denominations Message – paraphrase the original language into modern common English 21

Bible Authority – Bible Origins Which is best? Trouble with some translations Original Greek basis Byzantine Alexandrian Nestle-Aland (mix) for which most modern translations are based Determination of “reliability” Influence of other teachings Use and purpose 22

Bible Authority – Bible Origins A small comparison Matt 18:11 Eph 3:9 Mark 2:17 Acts 8:37 Rev 11:17 KJV NLT Amp Message NASB CEV NCV 11 For the Son of man is come to save that which was lost. 11 For the Son of man came to save [from the penalty of eternal death] that which was lost. 11 [”For the Son of Man has come to save that which was lost.] 11 The Son of Man came to save lost people.] 23
