Background:- First Container Terminal for handling containerized cargo in India in the year 1982 was at Chennai Port. First port to have privatised CFS as early as 1992 was Chennai Port. At the beginning infrastructure to be developed by govt. and ports. And CFS’s came to be set up within the extended area.
At Present CFS’s being the growth engines of the port sector and a very crucial role in helping the growth of international trade.
ICD’s and CFS’s in India IMC has sanctioned 286 ICD/CFS’s till 16-06- 2014. In 2013-14 IMC has cleared 8 ICD’s and 6 CFS’s. Out of 286 ICD/CFS’s 190 are functional and 96 under implementation.
