Greece and Persia The Persians were ruled by a people called the Medes for 150 years. In 550 BC Cyrus II led a revolt against the Medes. Cyrus won independence.

The Persian Wars

In 492 B.C. Darius of Persia demanded Greece become part of the Persian Empire.

Spartans and Athenians killed Darius’ messengers.

Enraged, Darius plans an invasion of Greece.

The Persians plan for a major battle at Marathon.

The Athenians ask for the help of Spartans. The Spartans needed a week to prepare for battle. Some Athenian generals were not prepared to wait. The Athenians generals decided to go into the battle alone without help.

Darius had an army of 50,000 to the Athenians 10,000.

The Athenians attack!

The Athenians won, but this was no time to play around.

The Greeks sent their fastest runner 26 The Greeks sent their fastest runner 26.2 miles to Athens to tell of the victory at Marathon.

Darius’ son Xerxes planned to conquer Greece in 480 B.C.

The Spartan army was ready and fight at Thermopylae (a Spartan loss).

The aftermath of the war. Athens becomes the dominant city-state in Greece. Creation of the Delian League- an alliance of all Greek city-states. Athens becomes resented by their former allies, especially Sparta.
