Plays include stage directions, a set, dialogue, and some narration. Features of Plays Plays are different than stories in books, but you can still imagine what’s happening while you are reading a play. Plays are written to be acted out on stage. Books are written so you can imagine the action in your head. Plays include stage directions, a set, dialogue, and some narration. With plays and theatre, you must ACT – be the character using your body, voice, emotions, and imagination. Plays still have the parts of a story and includes a theme.

Major Elements of Drama Dialogue – characters talking to each other. Find an example in your script. Action – the physical things the characters do in the play, including facial expressions. Setting – stage, lights, scenery.

Play Genres Drama – a serious subject matter. Comedy – a play that is light-hearted and funny. Tragedy – the events lead to the downfall of the main character.

Important Vocabulary Acts – units of action divided into parts called scenes. Dialogue – words the characters say. There are no quotation marks used in a play. Script – printed form of a play

Stage Directions – information usually in italics or in parentheses that tells what the stage should look like or how the character should feel or where the character should move on stage. Set – construction on stage that shows the time and place of the play. Props – moveable items or objects the actors use to make their actions more realistic.
