Warmup Questions 1. How do you find a job? Where do you look? 2. What kinds of jobs have you had? What was good about them? What was bad about them? 3. What kind of job would you like to have after you graduate? Why? 4. Do you network? Do you use Linkedin or other networking sites? 5. Are you proactive when searching for jobs?

Listening – Hidden Jobs Why was Sarah having a hard time finding a job? Why was Sarah using the same method over and over again? Why do they call them “hidden jobs”? What did Jennie do differently?

Listening – Answers She’s using a method that is not working and were she doesn’t stand out from the crowd. That’s what she knows and has been taught. The jobs are not advertised. She was more proactive. She set up an internet profile and researched the companies. She made them come to her by establishing a social media presence.

Listening II – Research Why is the case of the person who sends out 2000 resumes incorrect for sending out so many resumes? According to the narrator, what does category 1-4 consist of (before you send out a resume)? Is his advice similar to the previous video’s advice or different?

Listening II – Answers He keeps doing the same thing and getting no results. He only does what he knows. Research, research, research. Research companies, research your resume, research what to do next. (Personal opinion)

Discussion 1. What are your thoughts on the video? Do you think their advice is good? 2. What is the difference between active job hunting and passive job hunting? 3. Have you ever researched a company before applying to it? (apply to vs apply for) 4. In your opinion, what is the most valuable asset for getting a job? Rank the items below from most valuable to least valuable.

Tips for Finding a Job 1. PROACTIVE – set up an online profile (website, Facebook page, Twitter account).   2. NETWORK – most jobs you get are through connections – websites (LinkedIn) can help. 3. RESEARCH - Before you start applying for a job. What companies are hiring? Where are they hiring? What kind of applicant are they looking for? What does the company need? How can you improve yourself to become what the company is looking for? Do some research before sending out your resume.
