“Is Exercise frequency related to Body Mass Index?”  My first quantitative variable is Exercise. The unit of measurement for this variable is Number of times exercised per week” A few possible values for this first quantitative variable are length of time, frequency, Intensity, and type.   2. My second quantitative variable is Body Mass Index. The unit of measurement for this variable is Height & Weight. A few possible values for this second Quantitative variable are Lifestyle (days exercised per week), Age, and Gender.

This survey was handed out to participants at a local medical clinic This survey was handed out to participants at a local medical clinic. Subjects included: 37 obese, overweight, and healthy individuals in the Salt Lake City Valley. Voluntary Survey Today’s Date________________________________________________ Age: ___________________________________ Height: _______________________________ (In Feet and Inches) Weight: ______________________________ (Pounds) Please indicate from the following box the Number of times per week you participate in aerobic exercise. Thank you for your participation!!!

Purpose of study: “Is an exercise program indicative of a person’s body mass index?(BMI) based on population surveyed and/or does our study follow the same outcome surveyed by other statistics?” Most statistics that have a normal BMI outcome based on a person’s height and weight, generally have some level of daily/weekly exercise

“For adults, overweight and obesity ranges are determined by using weight and height to calculate a number called the "body mass index" (BMI). BMI is used because, for most people, it correlates with their amount of body fat. An adult who has a BMI between 25 and 29.9 is considered overweight. An adult who has a BMI of 30 or higher is considered obese”. (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) What does BMI mean? Body Mass Index (BMI) is an established measure utilized by physicians and health experts to determine weight status (i.e. underweight, overweight or within a healthy weight range).

How is a Body Mass Index obtained? Formula: Weight (pounds) Height (Inches) Underweight: <18.5 Normal: 18.5-24.9 Overweight: 25-29.9 Obesity: >30

The scatterplot graph shows a line of regression that is linear, it just does not show a strong correlation.

Box Plots compared Side by side

Difficulties/surprises encountered: We were surprised to find that some individuals didn’t exercise or exercised very little and still had an average Body Mass Index. Average meaning it was not over the recommended range that would mean someone would be considered obese. It was fascinating to see how many adults (age 40-50) have great BMI’s and are dedicated to exercising frequently; more often than their younger counterparts. Our survey did not pose the question to learn how long a participant had been on an exercise schedule when surveyed. *It should also be noted that just because someone has a high BMI does not necessarily mean that they are obese. Many body builders have very high Body Mass Index’s; thus high BMI’s are not excluded to sedentary individuals.
