Presentation transcript:

What is a Banned Book? Why? One that has been censored by an authority such as a government, a library, or a school Is actually removed from a library or school system American Library Association- “books are usually banned with the best intentions- to protect others, frequently children, from difficult ideas and information.” Infoplease.co/spot/banned-kids-books.html

Why Banned in F451? The demands made by every imaginable minority group “No one wanted to offend, no one would accept being offended” Books were “dumbed” down, became bland, “vanilla tapioca” Effects of technology and pressuring tactics of minorities resorted to book burning Litcharts.org

Popular Banned Books and Reasons Why Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl- too depressing Harriet the Spy- teaches children to lie, spy, talk back, and curse Harry Potter books- promotes witchcraft, sets bad examples and are too dark A Light in the Attic- an illustration that may encourage children to break dishes To Kill a Mockingbird- profanity and racial slurs Lord of the Flies- profanity, sexuality, racial slurs and excessive violence Of Mice and Men-profanity, racial slurs and use of the Lord’s name in vain

Think, Pair, Share What do you think of the idea of banning books? Do you agree or disagree with banning books? Who should be the judge regarding if a book should be banned? If you approve of banning books, how would you go about doing it, and what would be some of the books on your list? After answering these questions, turn to your shoulder partner and share.
