WHAT is GPS? GPS stands for Global Positioning System GPS is a Satellite Navigation System designed to provide accurate position, velocity, and time information almost anywhere in the world The GPS Program operated and controlled by the US Department of Defense GPS is a very precise positioning system

How does GPS work? Each satellite broadcasts its orbital position as a modulated signal Receiver determines the difference between the time signal from the satellite and its own internal clock The distance from the satellite can be calculated using the speed of light (300,000 Km/second) Position and distance from 3 or 4 satellites allows triangulation of receiver’s position

NEED FOR GPS BASED SECURITY TRACKING SYSTEM (STS) Petronet MHB Limited Installed the STS to monitor & ensure the movement of Security Line walkers for daily security checks. To maintain instant communication in times of need. Cost & Returns - The system is installed with a capital cost of Rs. 20.00 Lac. Avg. revenue expenses is Rs. 3.00 Lac per year. The return compared to investment in view of Safety & Security is abundant. .

GPS BASED STS A radio-navigation based system, To know where something is, GPS tracking system can potentially give both real-time and historic navigation data on any kind of journey, GPS tracking system can be used to monitor the route of the Pipeline line walker (LWs) who walks on the pipeline ROU In real time, STS is a Software package installed in server with operating system server edition installed with SQL database. The Server is configured as web server using Static IP address, All the data from scheduled GPS devices are taken through the internet and stored in the data base. Then depending on the IMIE number of the device the data is displayed in a proper table with reports.

OBJECTIVES GPS BASED STS To track LWs by having real-time information about their position, speed, stoppages, detours etc. on the pipeline ROU. The data will be available in the central database where users can see online status of LWs on digital maps, alongwith diagnostic reports and receive real-time alerts on mobile devices. A Data base will be created to cross verify historical events in case any untoward incidents detected.

ADVANTAGES Helps to track the precise location of LWs on the GPS mapped ROU stretch from the control room directly with validation of real time line walking. The movement of LWs on ROU is confirmed and availability time is increased by monitoring & communicating directly. Controlling the LWs movement on the ROU area if deviation is observed. Two way communication channel which allows LWs to communicate with Control room in exigencies, locate LWs in need of help & provide safety to individual LWs in emergency situations. Due to continuous monitoring, LWs availability increased in the ROU there by deterring the pilferage attempts/encroachments on the pipeline.

The reports of the GPS system of LWs will provide the proof of covering the pipeline on any given day. Availability of traces any time for line walker makes easy analysis of the line walking for improvements & attendance monitoring.

CONCLUSION GPS based STS helps to track the precise location of LWs & they can be guided in case of wrong movement on the ROU during the line walking. Availability Customized tracking reports in the system. Attendance can be linked to STS System; basis percentage of presence on pipeline stretch, which will improve the regularity of LWs on ROU. Regular monitoring of the ROU by LWs acts as deterrent to pilferers and encroachers thus by keeping the pipeline ROU is safe condition. Uses of commonly used mobile hand sets to be promoted with work profile of hand set managed by the Company.

POSSIBLE IMPROVEMENTS STS can be made a standard part of SCADA. Capability to send multimedia photo & videos as evidence of situations. QR points can be developed along the route which the LW can scan to log his presence. Device should be capable of fingerprint recognition to avoid impersonation. The need of the hour is to build artificial intelligence into the system to provide walking patterns.
