Data Publishing and Phase 2 of the Network EN2012 May 31, 2012

Topics to Cover Expanding from data reporting to data publishing What is data publishing and why is it so great? Examples of data publishing What’s Phase 2? Intro to tools that use services

What is data publishing? Data providers make data available through web services Data consumers can access data on demand and make targeted queries against it Publishing versus reporting

Examples of data publishing Travel booking websites NextBus Would you rather know when the bus is supposed to show up or when it actually will?

Examples of data publishing But what about environmental data?

Recapping the Benefits Data can be made available on demand in real-time Users can interact with published data dynamically rather than referencing a static document Aggregate data sets across interests and across organizations Tools can consume web services and help people interact with information and use it to make better decisions

Phase 2 of the Network Making the leap from data reporting to data publishing Make it easier to provide, discover, and use environmental information Exchange Network governance is currently writing a plan for implementing Phase 2 of the Network

Phase 2 Goals Maintain the Exchange Network as the standard way of exchanging regulatory environmental and environmental health information. Deliver access to timely, useful, and relevant environmental information. Pursue known data-sharing opportunities and seek out others through new partnerships. Ensure that the Exchange Network keeps pace with improved technology and new business needs. Establish long-term funding strategies that assure the stability and expansion of the Exchange Network.
