Accounting I Syllabus Ms. Garrett Room 4204 Contact Info: garrettc@aaps.k12.mi.us Website: http://christygarrett.weebly.com I. What is Accounting? Something to do with money? Working with math and numbers? That’s what most students say when I ask them that question. It’s my job this semester to provide you with a better answer! Basically accounting has to do with planning, recording, analyzing and interpreting financial information. In this class we will spend time breaking this down and seeing what it means in the real world. II. What will be taught in Accounting? Career opportunities – in and out of business related majors Accounting procedures for a small business. We will go through the process of setting up a new business and keeping all of the records for that business. Accounting procedures for a business organized as a partnership. Business simulation! This is an amazing culminating activity. We will spend the last three weeks of the semester doing all of the accounting work for a business organized as a partnership. This includes journalizing transactions, posting, preparing financial statements, issuing checks and performing closing entries at the end of the fiscal period. III. IB and Accounting? Ann Arbor Huron is an IB designated world school! MISSION: The Huron High School Career and Technical Education (CTE) department promotes equity and access for all Ann Arbor Public Schools students to CTE courses.  Classes are inquiry-based, hands-on, and incorporate global awareness through real-world problem solving activities.   The CTE department prepares students for employment and/or higher education through collaboration with local business and industry partners.  Leadership and community service opportunities are available through career and technical student organizations such as BPA, DECA, FCCLA, HOSA, and SkillsUSA. Over the next two years, I will continue to add curriculum and research based practices that embrace the IB pillars if inquiry, global awareness, action and service, and access and equity. We will also stress the IB learner profile in class. More information on the Learner Profile can be found at: http://www.ibo.org/en/benefits/learner-profile/

Accounting I Syllabus Ms. Garrett Room 4204 V. Grading Student work will be evaluated and/or assessed using both traditional evaluation methods and IB rubrics determined collaboratively by course teachers. You will be graded on a total points basis. You earn points from class assignments, homework assignments, class projects, study guides, and tests (including a cumulative final exam). The grading scale is as follows: 100-93 A 90-92 A- 89-87 B+ 86-83 B 82-80 B - 79-77 C+ 76-73 C 72-70 C- 69-67 D+ 66-63 D 62-60 D- 59-0 E Assessment days for the business department are Mondays and Fridays. Any major unit exam will fall on one of these days. STUDY for your exams. Retakes can only be used to bring E’s up to 60%. It’s important to be accountable for your education. Study, Study, Study!
