Personal Life Mary Oliver, was born on September 10, 1935 She was born in Maple Heights, Ohio (Suburb of Cleveland) Mary currently lives in Provincetown, Massachusetts Her father was Edward William who was a teacher and coach in the Cleveland public school system Her mother Helen M. V. Oliver, raised her to have a strong connection with nature. Her life time “partner” was Molly Malone Cook Cook, died of cancer in 2005

Education Mary went to Ohio State University Vassar College She did not obtain a degree from either program Mary has several honorary doctorates, due to the success of her works.

Influences She was greatly influenced by her parents, who taught her to love and enjoy nature Edna St. Vincent Millay a New York Poet a great influence to her, due to the short time she lived in her home after her death. Henry David Thoreau and Walt Whitman were also considered influences of hers. Mary’s poetic style is similar to James Wright, who was also one of her greatest influences.
