A. CANITIES: technical term for gray hair; caused by the loss of natural pigment in hair. Congenital canities: exists at or before birth; it occurs in albinos mostly, and occasionally in persons with normal hair. 2. Acquired canities: develops with age and is the result of genetics; the onset may occur prematurely in early adult life. May develop due to prolonged anxiety or illness. B. RINGED HAIR: is a variety of canities, characterized by alternating bands of gray and pigmented hair throughout the length of the hair strand.

C. HYPERTRICHOSIS: also known as hirsuties, it is superfluous hair; it is characterized by the growth of terminal hair in areas of the body that normally only grow vellus hair. Salon services: tweeze or remove by depilatories, electrolysis, shaving, or epilation.

D. TRICHOPTILOSIS: split hair ends. Caused: weathering, watering, hairstyling products/tools Salon services: conditioning to lubricate and soften ends and cutting. E. FRAGILITAS CRINIUM: brittle hair which causes splitting. Hair split into 2, 3 strands from end to root, 0.5-1.0 inch Caused: Physical, chemical Salon services: hair and scalp conditioning.

F. MONILETHRIX: beaded hair; the hair breaks between the beads or nodes. Salon services: scalp and hair conditioning. G. TRICHORRHEXIS NODOSA: knotted hair: this is a dry, brittle condition including formation of nodular swellings along the hair shaft. The hair breaks easily, which creates a brushlike spreading of fibers along the hair shaft. Caused: chemical, highly alkaline/ammonia, harsh brushing, hot tools Salon service: softening the hair with conditioners and moisturizers.
