Town centres are fighting back Let’s link this topic to you & what you know. What had Stafford become like? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PVJafAg_qHo Label your images: Number of shoppers Types of shops Vacant shops Environmental quality

Were they right to regenerate Stafford? How has Stafford been changing? New undercover shopping parade/centre Attracted new chain shops (Primark, H&M etc) Large new car park New restaurants and Coffee shops (Names examples?) Cleaned up the environment around the river New council buildings and Library. Planned new cinema Challenge – What problems can occur from the changes and can you suggest solutions?

Fieldwork - How has the Riverside development affected the TOWN CENTRE? We are going to visit the town centre to see how the Riverside regeneration has affected the town. The town will be split into 3 areas. To allow us to compare data! At each site we will complete: Footfall surveys Bi-polar survey Non participation survey Take photos Area 1 and 2 retail survey, in Area 3 we will see if Stafford is a clone town. Area 3, Goalgate Street (main High Street) Area 1 Guildhall Princes Street Area 2 Riverside

Method Positive Negative Improvements Reliability of results? Footfall surveys Bi-polar survey clone town survey

Reliability of results? Method Positive Negative Improvements Reliability of results? Footfall surveys Footfall counts indicate how busy an area is. Whether people are using the new services. Does this impacts on other parts of town? Simple strategy very reliable if timed correctly. Simplistic if just used on its own. Can change depending on time of day, e.g. lunchtime more office staff in town. Collected the data three times to gain an average which would be more reliable. Can be compared with Participation Observation Survey You didn’t know why people were in the areas – were they passing through? Bi-polar survey Allows comparison of each area, can be tailored to specific requirements e.g. Streetscape or vandalism. Allows environment improvement to be quantified / graphed. Can be subjective, must be completed by a single person so a comparison can be made. Only a snapshot view. Must be completed at a similar time to compare results. Only one person to do it or each factor and score can be given a requirement description. Opinions varied a lot which made the results hard to follow. clone town survey A clone town indicates a high need for regeneration or new focus – identity. Gives an indication of the range of shops available. Only completed part of the high street so wasn’t a fair distribution. Sampling (systematic sampling method) – every 3rd shop No because people were bias towards which shops they surveyed.

Non-participation observation   What does evaluate mean? It’s difficult to measure regeneration success. You can highlight this, and that schemes can be partially successful (e.g. only enviornmentally successful). You need to examine schemes over time, which we can’t do! Evaluation of METHODS Evaluation of RESULTS (DATA) Evaluation of the whole CONCLUSION Clone town survey Footfall survey Non-participation observation Sentence Starters… This method worked very well because….. The good points about this collection technique are…. Problems / limitations from this method were….. To improve the reliability of this method we could… The validity of my data is in question because of the sampling method….. I needed more data from this method….. because…. The reliability and accuracy of my results is… Anomalies have impacted my conclusions because… Issues from sampling were…. My results may not be reliable because…. I’m reasonably confident in my data because… To improve my investigation I would like to… To investigate my hypothesis further I want to…. To add more validity to my results I could…. If time and money were not issues I’d like to…
