Evidence of Life in the past Fossils Evidence of Life in the past

Why are fossils so important for the study of Historical Geology?

Conditions for Fossilization Rapid burial Hard parts- bones, shells, teeth Why is rapid burial important?

Petrified Fossils Wood-mineral rich water soaks into the pores Mineral replacement

Mold/ cast Mold is the impression made by organism. Cast is when the impression fills with sediment and is lithified.

Carbon films

Original preservation Ice man- Otzi, found in the Alps, preserved in ice 5400 years old

Trace Fossils- tracks, worm holes, Scat

Activity Create a mold and a cast of one of the provided fossils. Use a small ball of clay to create an impression(mold). Use plaster to fill the mold(cast) and let it dry overnight. Show me your mold and cast tomorrow for credit.
