Our Numbers are Growing! We now have 13,081 CPAN® and CAPA® Certified Nurses! CPAN – 7,623 CAPA – 5,458 Dually Certified – 747 The number of dually-certified nurses grew by almost 15% from the last year! These numbers are as of July 1, 2018 and represent steady growth year over year. Let’s all spread the news about the benefits and value of certification and keep the momentum going! This presentation will cover some important updates from ABPANC, as well as highlight some of our most popular resources. I will also discuss how individuals who are already certified can continue to be involved with ABPANC.

What’s New: Certification Updated Certification Requirements Streamlined Dates & Deadlines Vouchers for Employers ABPANC is excited to announce some changes. We have updated the number of clinical hours required for certification, streamlined our dates and deadlines so that they remain the same each year, and introduced vouchers for employers.

Guides We have detailed these changes on the ABPANC website. A link is available from the home page. You can download the PDFs, and we also have copies available at the ABPANC table.

What’s New: Recertification Updated Requirements Streamlined Dates & Deadlines Easier Reinstatement & Audit Process Vouchers for Employers We have also made significant changes to the Recertification program, which include decreasing the number of clinical hours required to be eligible for recertification, and modernizing the way contact hours are allocated.

Resource Spotlight: ABPANC Study App The ABPANC Study App has 50 CPAN and 50 CAPA study questions, plus a study reference for each question to help you prepare for the CPAN or CAPA certification exam All study questions in the app were originally published as part of the ABPANC Question of the Week program, and have been reviewed and updated with current references. These questions are brand new, and do not include any of the questions used in the first study App The app Study questions cover content in the three domains of perianesthesia patient care identified in the Test Blueprint. The app keeps track of all your correct answers and clearly identifies which questions have not yet been answered correctly. Once all questions have been answered correctly, you may continue to review your correct answers or clear all answers and start over. Because the CPAN and CAPA exams are written using the same Blueprints, the CAPA questions will likely be helpful to you even if you are taking the CPAN, and vice versa…. Like the practice exams, ABPANC gives candidates the reference and a page number to empower them to find the correct study reference.

Resource Spotlight: ABPANC Certification App ABPANC’s New “Free” Certification App is like having the ABPANC website content at your fingertips. The CPAN® / CAPA® Certification App is a collection of resources to help nurses prepare for and register for the CPAN and/or CAPA exams. Contents include eligibility and registration information for the exams, plus study resources, lesson plans, interactive reminders, a link to testing locations, practice exams and more.

Resource Spotlight: Practice Exams Evaluate your strengths and knowledge gaps. Similar in format to the real exam. Four 50-question exam forms available for purchase. Each practice examination contains 50 unique questions and costs $50. Receive a free practice examination for each one you purchase – BOGO 100 questions in a simulated test environment for $50 [ Visual: practice exams ] The purpose of the online CPAN and CAPA Practice Examinations is to provide a simulated (or similar) experience to taking the actual CPAN and/or CAPA certification examinations, and to provide an overview of candidate strengths and knowledge gaps. Questions on the practice test are representative of the types of questions seen on the actual CPAN and/or CAPA certification examinations. The correct answer and at least one reference is provided for each question as a study aid. It is important to note that ABPANC does not provide the rationale for the correct answer. ABPANC believes that empowering candidates to refer to the reference themselves to find the correct answer and understand the rationale makes them active participants in the learning process, which is ultimately better for their comprehension and retention. Passing a Practice Exam does not guarantee that you will pass the actual exam

Resource Spotlight: Study Question of the Week Each Wednesday at 6am ET, ABPANC posts a CPAN or CAPA study question. Use these questions as a discussion tool. The answer, along with the next week’s question, will be posted the following Wednesday at 6am. Each question contains the domain and content area, and is referenced using a publication on ABPAN’s Study References List. There website currently contains an archive of past questions. Encourage people to sign up to receive a question in their inbox. [ Do a show of hands to who is subscribed to QoW; if they are not subscribed, encourage people to subscribe ]

ABPANC Certification Coach ABPANC’s Certification Coaches can help you identify and use the most helpful study strategies. Scholarships are Available Applications are accepted May 1- June 30 for Fall Exams and Dec 1 – Jan 30 for Spring Exams Get the application form online at www.cpancapa.org/scholarship ABPANC offers a limited number of scholarships each year for certification and recertification fees. If your employer does not offer any monetary support you may be eligible. You can apply for the scholarship on the ABPANC website between May 1 and June 30 for Fall exams, or Dec 1 and January 30 for Spring exams.

As an ABPANC volunteer, you get free contact hours toward recertification. Coaching is a great way to use your experience to help others. A lot of our nurses really enjoy the challenge of writing items for possible use on the CPAN/CAPA examinations! If you have an interest, we have the resources and tools to help you enjoy the experience, learn, and contribute to the perianesthesia nursing field.
