IEEE Membership By Region 31 December 2011 R1 to 6 – 207,096 Updated with MGA’s numbers from year-end 2011. Members make up only 7% of the potential member market of engineers and other technologists in IEEE’s fields of interest. So, there is great opportunity for continued and more rapid growth, especially with the flexible dues structure for emerging countries. Retention of students in their first 5 years after graduation has become a key focus of IEEE as the total numbers of student members continues to rise. R10 – 97,393 R8 – 76,322 R9 – 18,235 TOTAL MEMBERSHIP – 415,989 5

Observations… Membership continues to grow Growth strongest in Regions 8-10 Geographic diversity, volunteer availability/participation are key strengths 6

IEEE and Region 9 Growing engagement with organizations, universities, members throughout the Region Rapid growth at local level; thus far in 2012… 11 new Society Chapters formed 6 new Student Branches formed 3 new WIE affinity groups formed Sections in Mexico and Columbia leading these efforts Mexico’s members are responsible for 8 new Society chapters, WIE affinity groups, and Student Branches. Colombia’s members are responsible for 6 new Society chapters, WIE affinity groups, and Student Branches.

Membership, while important, is not the only key to IEEE’s future Products, services, intelligent proactive evolution will be determining factors as well. But from members, come … 11/11/2018

…IEEE Volunteers Key to IEEE’s success About 40,000 individuals serving the organization, in roles such as… Local Section Chair Associate editor of a Journal, etc The volunteer effort is substantial From the President/CEO to local Section Chairs, major decisions are made by volunteers And the partnership with staff and members is important Pros/Cons of volunteer model: adds valuable diversity of thought, but suffers from rapid turnover in population. 9

IEEE: a Source of Technical Knowledge Current relevance is rooted in IEEE being technically pertinent Most successful when our fields of interest are important, economically and socially Ability to adapt, expand into and— most importantly—become the leader in new technical fields is critical to IEEE’s future relevance 11

1. New Technical Areas Ensure sustainable progress toward establishing IEEE’s leadership in important new technical areas (including the Smart Grid and selected areas within Life Sciences). Gordon Day (&PS) will continue

2. Digital Publishing (1EEE) Develop and approve a plan to ensure that IEEE is at the forefront of digital publishing technology. Gordon Day (&PS) will continue

3. IEEE Conference Strategy Develop and approve an IEEE Conference strategy – including protection of quality of IEEE publications. Gordon Day (&PS) will continue

4. Strategic Alliances Develop collaborative strategic alliances with other associations and publishers (including exploration of new joint membership agreements and incorporation of new publications in Xplore.

5. Member value: Ensure that all members are engaged and find a professional home in IEEE create a global strategic member development plan, particularly emphasizing practicing engineers/technologists and young professionals. - Gordon Day (&PS) will continue
