PAEMST Awards Program for Application Cycle 2017-2018

The Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) is the Highest Recognition that a kindergarten through 12th grade educator may receive for outstanding mathematics or science (including computer science) instruction in the United States. 11/11/2018

The National Science Foundation (NSF) administers PAEMST on behalf of The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) 11/11/2018

About the National Science Foundation 11/11/2018

108 exemplary teachers each year. About PAEMST Established by Congress in 1983, the President may recognize up to 108 exemplary teachers each year. An award may be given to two teachers (mathematics and/or science award category)  from each of the 50 states, Washington D.C., the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Department of Defense Education Activity schools, and the U.S. Territories as a group (U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, American Samoa, and the Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands).  11/11/2018

A certificate signed by the President of the United States Awardees Receive: A certificate signed by the President of the United States A $10,000 award from NSF (used at awardee’s discretion) A trip to Washington, D.C., for recognition events These events could include: an award ceremony; professional development activities; and discussions with policy-makers on how to improve  STEM education 11/11/2018

Who Can Apply for 2017-2018? Applicants must: Teach mathematics or science (including computer science) as part of their contracted teaching responsibilities at the K-6 grade level in a public (including charter) or private school Hold at least a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution Be full-time employees of the school or school district as determined by state and district policies, with responsibilities for teaching students no less than 50 percent of the school’s allotted instructional time Have at least five years of full-time employment as a K-12 teacher during which mathematics or science (including computer science) has been a part of the applicant’s teaching duties prior to the 2017-2018 academic school year 11/11/2018

Application Components There are 3 components to the online PAEMST application: Administrative Component Narrative Component Video Component 11/11/2018

Administrative Component The Administrative Component consists of: Teacher Information Form Employment Verification Form Letters of Recommendation (3) Resumé (not to exceed 2 pages) Demographic Information Form (optional) 11/11/2018

The applicant will choose a concept Narrative Component The narrative component consist of a written response that addresses the Five Dimensions of Outstanding Teaching and supplemental materials The applicant will choose a concept The concept will be used in the written response and when choosing a classroom lesson to video The application must include a reference page and may include supplemental material such as lesson plans, samples of student work, assessment items or publications 11/11/2018

Guidelines for the Narrative Component The Dimensions of Outstanding Teaching Template is provided for you to complete offline and paste into the boxes in the written response portion of your application The total allowable character count for all responses is 25,000 characters The total character count will keep your responses to around 12 pages of double spaced, 12-point font with one- inch margins You may divide your responses however you wish between the five dimensions and multiple prompts 11/11/2018

Guidelines for the Narrative Component Supplemental materials (SM): must be submitted as one single file not exceeding 6 pages; must not be a continuation of the administrative or narrative component; should be labeled with applicant name, Teacher ID, and page number on every page; should be referenced within the written response (such as SM1, SM2, etc.); 11/11/2018

Guidelines for the Narrative Component Supplemental materials (SM): should include a list of citations if any research articles or materials are discussed in the written response (REQUIRED); may be submitted in the following formats: Adobe Portable Document Format (.pdf), Microsoft Word (.doc or .docx), Rich Text Files (.rtf), or Image Files (.gif, .jpeg, .jpg, .png); Please note: Documents larger than 100 MB cannot be uploaded. 11/11/2018

Guidelines for the Video Component In order to provide in-depth evidence of the applicant’s knowledge and abilities, the video must: correspond to the concept chosen and discussed in Dimension One; be of a single class, lesson or experience during the 2017-2018 school year; not be more than 30 minutes or one class period, whichever is shorter; be continuous footage, unedited and devoid of any stopping and restarting of the camera*; *If there is a break in your video files of less than one second, please combine the files and submit the single file. If the break is longer, you will need to either retake the video or only submit one of the video files. 11/11/2018

Guidelines for the Video Component In order to provide in-depth evidence of the applicant’s knowledge and abilities, the video must: come from a single camera and not contain multiple screens upon viewing adhere to all district or school requirements and guidelines for parental release or student permission related to classroom video recording AND release of student data be of sufficient quality so that the applicant’s face and the students’ faces are visible and voices are audible 11/11/2018

Important Changes for 2017/2018 Application A Reference (Works Cited) Page is REQUIRED as 1 page of your 6 pages of Supplemental Materials (SM) Supplemental Materials (SM) is now capped at 6 pages, down from previous cycles of 10 pages The video only needs to be 30 minutes in length, down from previous 45 minutes The resumé has a limit of 2 pages, down from 3 pages in previous cycles States will recognize 3 State Finalists for EACH Category (Science and Mathematics) instead of 5 11/11/2018
