Converting Units of Capacity MD. 1

Learning Target I can convert units of capacity, such as quarts to gallons OR gallons to quarts.

Our Goal Complete each problem. 1.) 20 cups = _____ pints 2.) ____pints = 16 quarts. 3.) When I convert small units to large units, I _____. 4.) When I convert large units to small units, I ______.

Rules for Converting Units When you go from a small unit to a larger unit, you will _________. When you go from a large unit to a smaller unit, you will _______.

The Land of Capacity There once was a king who lived in the land of capacity. He was a giant king, so all the townspeople called him King G. Now, let me tell you, he was a playa! He had not one, not two, not three, but four queens who lived with him in the land of capacity. With those four queens, he had a prince and princess a piece. A prince and princess with the first queen, a prince and princess with the second queen, a prince and princess with the third queen, and a prince and princess with the fourth queen. And, all those eight princes and princesses had two crowns. One crown was special and was only worn to the ball. The other was the one they wore to less fancy occasion like the mall. One for the ball and one for the mall. (Four times) Now, each of those crowns had 8 of the precious stone opal on them.

Work With Me Brayden is making apple cider for the Fall Festival. If he makes 172 quarts, how many gallons did he make? SLD 172/4=43 gallons

You Try & Check with Your Partner 1.) Convert 16 cups to pints. 2.) Convert 424 pints to quarts. SLD 16/2=8 pints 424/2=212 quarts Explain the conversion rule that you used to find the amount of feet.

Watch Me Lane bottles 5 quarts of barbecue sauce. Then, he bottles another 7 quarts of barbecue sauce. How many 1-cup servings of barbecue sauce does he have? LSM 5 + 7= 12 quarts 12quarts x 2 pints x 2 cups = 48 cups

If Jordan has 6 gallons of water, how many pints does she have? Work With Me If Jordan has 6 gallons of water, how many pints does she have? LSM 6x8= 48 pints

You Try & Check with Your Partner 1.) Convert 54 quarts to pints. 2.) Convert 10 gallons to quarts. LSM 54x2=108 pints 10x4=40 quarts Explain the conversion rule that you used to find the amount of feet.

Work With Me Mrs. Dawn made 8 quarts of soup on Monday, 5 quarts of soup on Tuesday, and 5 quarts of soup on Wednesday. If she serves each guest 1 cup of soup, how many guests can she serve in all? LSM 8+5+5=18 quarts 18x2=36 cups= 36 guests

You Try & Check with Your Partner 1.) Convert 48 fluid ounces to cups. 2.) Convert 32 fluid ounces to pints. LSM 48/8=6 cups 32/8=4 cups/2=2 pints Explain the conversion rule that you used to find the amount of feet.

Work With Me Luke measured 2.5 quarts of cherries and 0.5 quarts of peaches. How many pints of fruit did Luke measure altogether? LSM 2.5 + 0.5= 3 quarts/2=1.5 pints

You Try & Check with Your Partner Emily bakes 10 loaves of bread for the party. She needs 4 cups of milk for each loaf. How many quarts of milk does she need to make all of the loaves? 4 cups x 10 loaves = 40 cups/2= 20 pints/ 2= 10 quarts Explain the conversion rule that you used to find the amount of feet.
