Week one - Introduction Figure Drawing Week one - Introduction

Rules of the life room Respect the model Absolutely no cameras, phones or recording equipment No rubbers – Make mistakes by drawing over lines then work darker if necessary Work light to draw initial measurements and observations then build up to dark tonal lines Try new techniques Label your drawings – name, date, technique, materials used and length of pose

Learning outcomes List the rules of the life room Use basic lines and then geometry to represent the human form Explain the study of human form and it’s representation in History

The human body is a complicated structure constructed of approximately 206 bones and 640 skeletal muscles with many more smaller muscles that control areas of the body such as the heart, the iris, swallowing and goose bumps.

History The human form has been a focus of study since cave paintings right up to present day. Whether the reason is artistic, scientific, religious or to document history the study of anatomy and the mastery of depicting the human form is essential to almost all areas of art. Examples of which in modern day industry are fashion design, game design, fine art, illustration, and film and medical prosthetics

Examples The bird and the Man Las Caux caves 15,000 BC

Examples Upper Egypt,Tomb of Nebamun – 1350 BC

Examples 79 AD Pompeii, house of Titus Dentatus Panthera

The human form – Let’s simplify it

The human form – Breaking it down

It even works on hands

Tasks for today We will set a series of very quick poses where you will represent the model’s pose using the stick figures as depicted on the first image of your hand out We will then have a series of longer poses where you will use geometric shapes to represent the model’s pose Finally you will have the final hour to complete full detail figure drawing using the full A1 page

Later sessions In later sessions we will explore a range of exercises and skills to help with your drawing skills. Measuring using a pencil Negative space Body proportion Body structure and anatomy Tone Quick drawing exercises similar to the first unit

Learning outcomes List the rules of the life room Use basic lines and then geometry to represent the human form Explain the study of human form and it’s representation in History
