Figurative Language

Rhyming words: words that end with the same sound that create pattern and rhythm Real/pearl/curl Conceal/meal/feel Cheer/fear/mere/hear/here There/their/pear/stare/stair/chair/hair/hare Now write your own rhyming words

Simile: When two things are compared using “like” or “as” The air is like a mother's hand Laid softly on a throbbing brow, It was as funny as a barrel of monkeys. Now write your own simile

Metaphor: When two things are compared without “as” or “like” You are a couch potato. He has a heart of stone. Now complete the metaphor about your bedroom: My room is ________________________________ .

Onomatopoeia: a sound device – mimics sounds ( to add fun to the poem) The burning wood hissed and crackled. The happy frogs croaked. beep, whirr, click, whoosh, swish, zap, hum, boom, munch, gobble, crunch, smash, wham, quack, meow, oink, and tweet. Now complete these sentences using one of the onomatopoeia above: The car wipers went ____________. The car horn went ______________. The cat _____________d when the dog bit it.

Personification: Giving inanimate objects human characteristics The Dawn is awake. Alright, the sky misses the sun at night. Complete this sentence: Last night, the dark sky __________________ a sea of tears.

Alliteration: Repetition of consonants at the beginning of a word Clean cat Mushy mind Betty bought butter but the butter was bitter (this is a tongue twister) Now try to write your sentence using alliteration. Use this picture.

Pun: A play of words for a humorous effect Pun: A play of words for a humorous effect. The word used suggests more than one meaning.
