LESSON #2: TYPES OF READING AND MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTIONS

Lesson #2: Types of Reading and Multiple-Choice Questions What you will need for this session: Reading Tips and Strategies Student Package Practice Booklet - OSSLT Reading Tasks Pens, Pencils and Highlighters A Positive Attitude :)

Today’s Learning Goals: We are learning: about the type of reading tasks on the OSSLT ways to approach the different reading tasks about strategies we can use when reading a variety of texts on the OSSLT how to respond to multiple- choice questions

Reading Tasks on the OSSLT For the OSSLT, reading is defined as the process through which the reader makes meaning of a variety of written texts You will need to show: • understanding explicitly (directly) stated ideas and information; • understanding implicitly (indirectly) stated ideas and information and • making connections between information and ideas in a reading selection and personal knowledge and experience.

Tips for Reading Highlight and underline key words- this is allowed! Use the ROUGH NOTES space provided in the booklets to jot down ideas Some people like to read the questions before reading the actual text so they know what to look for Read the first and last sentences of a paragraph with extra care- important information is often there Look at the title and the pictures to help with your understanding Think about what you already know about the topic to help you understand some questions have an answer that is directly stated in the reading; others require you to think and add your own thoughts about the reading What strategies do you use when reading? (See your packages for Reading Tips)

Tips for Multiple Choice Questions Many of the questions related to the reading selections are multiple choice questions Be sure to read all the choices Multiple Choice questions can have several possible answers. You need to select the best answer from the choices given. This means you may need to pause and think carefully about the choices given Cross out the choices that seem totally incorrect (this is called the “process of elimination”) Go back and review the reading if you are having trouble making a choice Remember to put the answer in the ANSWERS Booklet. Anything you write in the QUESTIONS Booklet will not be marked. Always try and answer the question. Never leave a question blank!

Types of Reading on the OSSLT You will have... 4 types of reading: 1) Information paragraph: presents ideas and information on a topic 2) News report: presents information in the form of a news story 3) Dialogue: presents a conversation between two or more people 4) Real-life narrative: presents an account of a significant time in an individual’s life 5) Graphic text: presents ideas and information with the help of graphic features, such as diagrams, photographs, drawings, sketches, patterns, timetables, maps, charts or tables
