GROWTH & DEVELOPMENT As a PSW, you will care for clients of all ages and different stages of human growth and development. In order to provide the best quality care, you must be able to identify and understand the different stages as well as their characteristics.
GROWTH & DEVELOPMENT Growth- physical changes that can be measured: Height and weight Physical appearance Body functions Development – changes in psychological and social functioning G & D Overlap Depend on each other Occur at the same time Affect the whole person
GROWTH & DEVELOPMENT There are 6 basic principles of G & D G & D occur from fertilization until death The process goes from simple to complex G & D occur in certain directions Head to foot Center of the body outwards G & D occur in a sequence, order and pattern. Developmental tasks must be completed in each stage in order to move to the next The rate of G & D is uneven, no set pace Each stage has its own characteristics and tasks
GROWTH & DEVELOPMENT There are 9 stages of G & D Infancy (Birth to 1 yr) Toddlerhood (1 - 3 yrs) Preschool (3 - 6 yrs) Middle Childhood (6 - 8 yrs) Late Childhood (9 - 12 yrs) Adolescence (12 – 18 yrs) Young Adulthood (18 – 40 yrs) Middle Adulthood (40 -65 yrs) Late Adulthood (65 yrs and older)
GROWTH & DEVELOPMENT In partners, choose a developmental stage and develop a short lesson using any resources you find necessary (videos, pictures, games etc) Lesson must include: The stage of G & D Definition of the stage Developmental tasks Important points regarding that stage A review handout for the class (quiz, crossword, matching etc) This lesson will be presented to the rest of the class on Tuesday March 25/14
