Applying Newton’s Third Law

Performance Expectation Apply Newton’s Third Law to design a solution to a problem involving the motion of two colliding objects. Examples of practical problems could include the impact of collisions between two cars, between a car and stationary objects, between a meteor and a space vehicle.

Lesson – Applying Newton’s Third Law Engage Students will watch a short segment on asteroids and read an article using #CUBS #CUBS # paragraphs Circle Main Ideas Underline Examples Box (highlight) Vocabulary Side Commentary

Lesson – Applying Newton’s Third Law Explore Students will perform an experiment with a marble, ramp, and displacement block. They will measure the amount of displacement in cm vs mass of the marbles.

Lesson – Applying Newton’s Third Law Explain Students will create a graph showing the relationship between the number of marbles and the displacement of the block.

Lesson – Applying Newton’s Third Law Elaborate Create a device to help protect consumers in an accident given a limited amount of material. Students will be allowed to choose from the following materials: Cardboard, Styrofoam cup, packing peanuts, or bubble wrap. Every group will receive tape.

Lesson – Applying Newton’s Third Law Evaluate Graph/ Collaboration/Product performance

Lesson Development What do students need to learn how to figure out. NGSS CA Science Standard What do students need to learn how to figure out. ABC …. Activity Before Concept Reading for understanding What do students need to know? Knowledge based Reading for knowledge

Teaching, Learning, and Assessment NGSS CA Science Standards Student centered Understanding big concepts Fewer standards/broader concepts Students derive answers Teacher directed Knowledge based Many standards Students given answers

Lessons Learned / NGSS Advice It’s going to take time to learn and implement NGSS Integrating Engineering principles allows the students to explore beyond the standard Teacher planning will be focused more on what students Download the NGSS APP … a simplified version of the standards
