Focus Question: Epilogue MAIN IDEA: All of the stories in this book appear to lie outside of ordinary experience. But they don’t. They are products of history and community, of opportunity and legacy. Their success is not exceptional or mysterious. It is grounded in a web of advantages and inheritances, some deserved, some not, some earned, some just plain lucky– but all are critical to making them who they are. The outlier, in the end, is not an outlier at all.

Summary Section- SQ Review (class instruction) 1. How do the qualities of outliers Gladwell has discussed throughout the book apply to Gladwell’s family? -His great-great-great grandmother was a slave purchased at Alligator Pond in Jamaica. -She then had her son with her WHITE owner. The son, John Ford, with the “master” who was a “mulatto” , inheriting light enough skin to be privileged in his society -John Ford’s granddaughter was Daisy Ford. She later married Donald Nation. They both believed in education. -Daisy had twin girls in 1931: Joyce & Faith. Joyce owes her college education to W.M. MacMillian, a student who gave up a scholarship, Mr.Chance, and her mom Daisy. -Joyce grew up and married Graham Gladwell. They had a son named Malcom Gladwell, who wrote this book.

SQ #2 2. Why does Malcolm Gladwell say that the story of this mother’s path to success was not “not true”? He writes that “it leaves out my mother’s many opportunities and the importance of her cultural legacy.” W.M. MacMillan wrote about the inadequacies of the Jamaican educational system. After his book was published, there were riots. So Jamaica began offering scholarships in 1941. Her twin got one of these scholarships. She got one that someone else gave up. Mr. Chance, a Chinese shopkeeper, loaned Daisy money to send Joyce to college. Daisy made it possible for Joyce to make a life outside of Jamaica.

SQ #3 3. After reading about the opportunities Joyce Gladwell had in Jamaica, consider the opportunities we have living here in America. Do we have more or fewer opportunities? Why or why not? Discussion.

SQ #4 4. How have relationships with specific people through your life so far contributed to your success in any area? Who has helped you specifically here at PV High? EXAMPLE. For me, Mrs. Kostenrich gave me her study materials for a test I had to take for CA certification in teaching students learning English. Her materials and her notes helped me study. I passed the test. I was hired at PV High. Other examples?

Jamaica in 18th century Daisy Nation was from the Igbo tribe of West Africa. Unlike in America, mulatto children had an advantage. These children were seen as allies between races They moved up social and economic ladder In Jamaica, blacks outnumbered whites by ratio of 10 to 1 There were few marriageable white women Many white men took black or brown mistresses= producing mixed “mulatto” children Many white men were planation owners who wanted to make money & return to England. They did not want to stay in Jamaica. SO the doctors and lawyers were COLORED JAMAICANS They also ran the schools. THEY were the cultural elite, even though the whites were the economic elite DAISY FORD inherited of legacy of privilege. Colin Powell also inherited this cultural legacy!

What is success? Think / Pair/ Share In your groups, make a list of what you think defines success. DO we AGREE with Gladwell?? Or not?? Where is he right? Where was he oversimplifying? What the heck does he mean by: “The outlier, in the end, is not an outlier at all” ?????
