Polic

Wind Energy in the US

The US has lots of wind energy potential

5.5% OF THE US’ ELECTRICITY IS FROM WIND

Some of that is smaller turbines

Wind farms have a large supply chain

The Wind Industry is Growing Steadily

Good policy is key

Wind Energy in Virginia

Virginia has good wind potential

Projects are being proposed and prospected

Rocky Forge is in the process of getting state permits PROJECT SUMMARY Project size: Up to 75 MW (anticipated) Enough energy to power up to 20,000 U.S. homes Turbines will be spaced approximately 1/4 mile apart Existing high-voltage power lines and highways would limit the need for new infrastructure Up to 25 modern, slow-spinning wind turbines (may be up to 550 feet from base to tip, spinning at an average rate of about 15 RPM) Power will be delivered into the Virginia electrical grid Up to 150 FTE jobs and significant local spending during construction Approximately 7 full-time jobs created for operations and maintenance Taxpayers protected against decommissioning costs Would represent a significant investment in the local economy, with revenues for property owners, local government services, and schools for 30 years Provide $20-$25 million in state and county tax revenue over the life of the project

Virginia will leverage their Supply Chain Assets for offshore wind

There are still Science and Policy issues to address

Lots of Workforce Needs

Community Outreach Plays an Important Role

What MASON can do to Help! Be informed and inform others Chock up on wind energy facts Write letters to the editor Put on a community event Work with industry to identify engineering and science research needs Review current legislation (state and federal) and write to your legislators
