What does a radiographer do?

Taking x-rays in a radiography department

Assisting in special procedure and fluoroscopy studies

Taking Portable x-ray images

Taking images in the surgical suite

How do I become a radiographer? Attend a program that provides academic and clinical training as designed by the ASRT www.asrt.org Montgomery College Radiologic Technology program accredited by the JRCERT www.jrcert.org

What is a radiographer Successful completion of a Radiologic technology program allows the graduate to sit for the ARRT national certification exam www.arrt.org RT ( R) Registered Technologist (Radiography)

THE PROGRAM Accredited by the Joint Review Committee of the Education of Radiologic Technologists (JRCERT) Credit program with an award of an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree Graduates of the program staff the majority of the metropolitan hospitals

PROGRAM START THE PROGRAM BEGINS THE WEEK OF MEMORIAL DAY EACH YEAR.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS Reference: www.montgomerycollege.edu/rt Montgomery College student Separate Application to RT Program Application deadline MARCH 1 Completion of college level Math and English and completion of Biology 150 and BIOL 212 TEAS placement test 27 spaces All students accepted into the program are required to have a criminal background check and complete a alcohol or drug testing test based on clinical site placement. General MC Admission open enrollment, completion of admission form, $25 fee, put on application form Code #520 Pre-Radiologic Technology placement test (ACCUPLACER - Native English-Speaking, CELT - Non-Native English-Speaking students) or College Entrance Exam (e.g., SAT 500 verbal/math transcript from high school or other college(s) Deadline April 1 for the following fall, applications available in Jan. from Admissions Ranking by GPA - beginning with county, to state, to out of state residents persons living in a Md. county w/o a Community Col. w/ an RT program - same as in-county residents for selection priority & fees acceptance letters sent out around June or July with invitation to an orientation session Math, English and Other Course Eligibility (must be eligible for MA112 and EN101/101A hidden requirements based upon prerequisites and assessment results complete as much general ed requirements as possible before entering the clinical program (will have to take concurrently with clinical courses if not completed) Space Limited - 3-4 times as many applicants for the program

Please refer to the TEAS link located on the Rad Tech web page www.montgomerycollege.edu/rt Prospective students will be required to take the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) in order to be considered for a seat in the Radiologic Technology Program. TEAS test assess reading, math, science and English skills.

TEAS CONT. With the TEAS test as part of the application requirement, ranking candidates by GPA would no longer be used. However, a minimum GPA of 2.5 would still be required Students would ranked by TEAS scores Those students who have appropriate TEAS scores and have all of the priority classes and have indicated radiography as their first choice would be given first preference.

Duties of a radiographer Pages 6 and 7 as denoted by the US Dept of Labor Simplified version!!! Lift and move patients and accessories Coordinate movement of equipment, such as portable machines and accessories Utilize the skills needed to perform procedures with “Standard Precautions” when working with all types of patients Give oral instructions clearly to patients, peers and healthcare personnel Hear audible cues and warnings of imaging equipment and life support devices Utilize the sense of touch in order to provide patient care and position patients for radiographic examinations Evaluate images distinguishing between black,white and shades of grade tones. Utilize interpersonal skills to handle patients with physical or emotional trauma

CLINICAL COMPONENT First year Fall- RADT 120 hours Tuesdays and Thursdays at assigned clinical site 7:30-4:00 = 240 hours Spring –RADT 124 8 hours Tuesdays and Thursdays at assigned clinical site 7:30-4:00 = 240 hours Summer - RADT 125 8 hours Mondays through Fridays 7:30-4:00 for 9 weeks = 360 hours

CLINICAL COMPONENT Second years Fall- RADT 224 8 hours Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays 7:30-4:00 = 360 hours Spring -RADT 225 8 hours Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays 7:30-4:00 = 360 hours TOTAL CLINICAL HOURS = 1560 RADT 240 (registry review class) Spring Students graduate in May of their final year.
