Proposal to 802.15 TG4g FHSS Proposal May 12, 2009 IEEE 802.15

Overview Goals of PAR Outline how proposal addresses PAR Details of PHY frame changes Important considerations to meet utility requirements

Scope/Goals of TG4g Define an alternate PHY layer for 802.15.4 with only those MAC modifications needed to support the PHY layer implementation Support operation in any of the regionally available license exempt frequency bands, such as 700MHz to 1GHz, and the 2.4 GHz band Data rate of at least 40 kbps but not more than 1000 kbps Achieve the optimal energy efficient link margin given the environmental conditions encountered in Smart Metering deployments Principally outdoor communications PHY frame sizes up to a minimum of 1500 octets Simultaneous operation for at least 3 co-located orthogonal networks Connectivity to at least one thousand direct neighbors characteristic of dense urban deployments Provide mechanisms that enable coexistence with other systems in the same band(s) including IEEE 802.11, 802.15 and 802.16 systems

Proposal to Address Goals of TG4 Define an alternate PHY layer for 802.15.4 with only those MAC modifications needed to support the PHY layer implementation Overview of Proposed PHY Layer FSK modulation 400 kHz channel spacing to support higher data rates Supports data rates of 60 and 240 kbps Channel bandwidth requirements based on data rate (<= 400 kHz) Programmable output power (to suit various device types)

Proposal to Address Goals of TG4 Support operation in any of the regionally available license exempt frequency bands, such as 700MHz to 1GHz, and the 2.4 GHz band Proposal supports operation in 868 MHz, 915 MHz, and 2.4 GHz bands

Proposal to Address Goals of TG4 Data rate of at least 40 kbps but not more than 1000 kbps Proposed PHY Layer Supports data rates of 60 and 240 kbps Data rate based on device type, but all devices are interoperable Provides a low data rate for simple low end devices, while also providing a higher data rate for the powered mesh devices

Proposal to Address Goals of TG4 Achieve the optimal energy efficient link margin given the environmental conditions encountered in Smart Metering deployments Proven operation in outdoor environments Proven operation with all types of smart meters (electric, gas, water, etc) Proven communications bridge to in-home devices Supports communications from outdoor devices into the home Both single family residential and multi-unit structures (e.g. apartment complexes)

Proposal to Address Goals of TG4 Principally outdoor communications Communication backbone is principally outdoors, BUT it is critical to get from the meter into the home Must get from outdoor devices into the home Must support multi-home dwellings

Proposal to Address Goals of TG4 PHY frame sizes up to a minimum of 1500 octets PHY frame supports PSDU up to 4095 octets Support for 2048 octets with or without FEC (standard interface to MAC layer)

Proposal to Address Goals of TG4 PHY frame sizes up to a minimum of 1500 octets No overhead expense for data whitening Supports variable data whitening seed based on channel number

Proposal to Address Goals of TG4 Simultaneous operation for at least 3 co-located orthogonal networks In 915 MHz band: 64 channels available for standard operation (240 kbps) 128 channels available for low data rate mode (60 kbps) In 2.4 GHz band: 207 channels available for standard operation (240 kbps) 414 channels available for low data rate mode (60 kbps)

Proposal to Address Goals of TG4 Connectivity to at least one thousand direct neighbors characteristic of dense urban deployments FHSS approach provides the functionality to meet these requirements

Proposal to Address Goals of TG4 Provide mechanisms that enable coexistence with other systems in the same band(s) including IEEE 801.11, 802.15, and 802.16 FHSS channel planning provides for coexistence Proven network performance in the presence of commonly encountered interference sources Applicable to the 868 MHz, 915 MHz, and 2.4 GHz frequency bands

Proposal for TG4 Items that are critical for a FHSS amendment PHY should allow for a slower data rate for simple or power constrained devices Data rate must provide for today’s needs but also provide for increased data needs in the future PHY should support a high data rate similar to what 802.15.4 allows today (250 kbps)

Support for Variable Data Rates For all devices, preamble transmitted at lowest common data rate (60 kbps) Variable length preamble SFD uniquely identifies the data rate for the remainder of the frame

Support for Variable Data Rates Powered devices that provide mesh infrastructure primarily communicate at 240 kbps Faster data rate expected for new standard Data rate must think forward (future proof) Expected data requirements will increase. For example, multi-channel, 1 minute interval data provided near real time Utility needs (i.e. Smart Grid) not limited to metering data

Proposal for TG4 Items that are critical for a FHSS amendment Standard should not be limited to utility networks, but for utility networks, it must handle: Electric Gas (battery powered) Water (battery powered) Networks must function from same communication platform Not acceptable to just co-exist Electric, water, and gas must be interoperable

Proposal for TG4g Details to be added for FHSS amendment MAC layer changes to allow battery powered (sleepy) devices to synchronize to network Battery powered devices rely on powered devices for data transport MAC layer details to be provided as part of TG4 effort and coordinated with TG4e

Conclusion Must support all utility devices and applications Electric (many applications) Gas and Water Support minimal number of data rates for interoperability, but data rates that consider future needs not historical AMI Faster data rate for large transfers in near real time FHSS proposal can meet requirements, but significant work is required at the MAC layer to support FHSS PHY Changes driven by 4g, but must be coordinated with 4e

Thank you!!
